There has always been considerable debate about the best solutions to deal with disruptive behaviour in schools. On the one hand is the strategy of segregating disruptive pupils while on the other is a commitment to keeping such pupils in the ordinary school. This book advocates the latter philosophy and examines the best ways of coping with the problem. These concern both teacher skills and school organisational flexibility. In addition, the authors propose the provision of a support team whereby local authorities can help schools, teachers and children with problems of disruption without setting up 'sin-bins'. Change is thus shown to be possible at three levels - teachers, headteachers and local authorities. Detailed illustrative case material is presented throughout the book.

Children who exhibit explosive, dangerous, or noncompliant behavior present a difficult challenge to school personnel (Smallwood, 2003). Teachers who lack the ability to cope with disruptive behavior or with a student in crisis may perceive themselves as unsuccessful, resulting in stress and, in extreme cases, teacher burnout and turnover. Furthermore, teachers express lower levels of competence and job satisfaction when working with disruptive children. Research supports empirically validated classroom interventions that teachers can utilize to create an optimal learning environment and a site-specific plan to address behavioral challenges. This project addresses the training needs of teachers who work with disruptive students. The training module is research-based highlighting the prevention and intervention of disruptive classroom behavior. The module is a guide for teachers in the creation of a personalized prevention and intervention plan. This project was accomplished through the collaborative efforts of both authors. Related studies were researched, examined, and organized to support the project. During the writing process, drafts of individual chapters were prepared by a primary author. Chapters were then reviewed, edited and revised by both authors. The training module (Appendix A) was created in collaboration by both authors.

The purpose of this research report is to explore practices that teachers can use to respond to behavior problems in their classes. Preliminary discussion focuses on understanding the context of student behavior and identifying student behavior problems early. Positive responses to student behavior problems are discussed in terms of the following tips: use a preventive approach; establish fair limits; set a positive example; restore order when a problem occurs; avoid delegating classroom management problems to others whenever possible; locate the real problem; change the classroom environment when necessary; provide alternatives to undesirable behavior; help students understand the consequences of their behavior; make provisions for a time out; help students modify their behavior; use group counseling procedures to promote positive behavior; avoid reinforcing negative behavior; invite students to succeed in the classroom; and know how to deal with pathological behavior. Five teacher behaviors--modeling, designing, interacting, responding, and assessing--are discussed as ways of introducing students to a way of life in the classroom.
