Nella maggior parte dei bambini lo sviluppo del linguaggio e delle altre funzioni cognitive procede solitamente in modo armonico, con variabili individuabili più o meno marcate. Spesso non riconosciute o scambiate per altro, le difficoltà ad apprendere condizionano il sistema dei rapporti familiari e scolastici, poiché è un problema che può durare nel tempo, la reazione dei genitori (a volte iperprotettivi, altre apprensivi e altre volte ancora aggressivi e autoritari ) spesso diverge da quella degli insegnanti o degli esperti. D'altra parte per i genitori, che spesso vivono il disturbo di apprendimento del figlio come una colpa, accettare tale sfida è una scommessa sul futuro che impegna l'intero ecosistema familiare. Una sfida che coinvolge, a un livello diverso, anche il mondo della scienza, chiamata a cercare le cause e a trovare spiegazioni e ragioni per ogni "diversità".
