Geovanni Gomes Cabral nos conta que, para criar seus versos e gravuras, José Costa Leite – nascido em 1927 na pequena cidade paraibana de Sapé e residente na igualmente diminuta Condado, em Pernambuco – "vivia caçando" textos, ideias e palavras. Espreitando sons, imagens e gestos em diversos lugares do Nordeste, Costa Leite construiu uma obra viva e pulsante, expressa sobretudo na forma de folhetos, xilogravuras, almanaques e, é claro, performances nas feiras populares. Construiu também a si mesmo, moldou-se em uma autobiografia, deu sentido a sua existência e procurou transmitir lições às novas gerações. Contraditoriamente, teve sua obra consagrada como patrimônio, mas hoje encontra dificuldade para vender livros e gravuras como antes. Geovanni também é um caçador. Munido de sofisticadas "armas" teóricas e metodológicas, ele foi buscar Costa Leite em diversos arquivos, nos quais encontrou fontes tão variadas como álbuns, livros, fotografias, discos, orações avulsas, almanaques sertanejos, matrizes xilográficas, reportagens de jornal, cartas, manuscritos, diários e a já referida autobiografia. Também realizou entrevistas com o artista e com pessoas próximas a ele. Com todos esses materiais, construiu uma narrativa ao mesmo tempo respeitosa e crítica a respeito de sua "caça". Porém, ao contrário dos caçadores, que matam, devoram e empalham as suas presas, Geovanni optou por emprestar-lhes ainda mais vida, conferindo complexidade à trajetória de Costa Leite ao inseri-la em um contexto histórico amplo e multifacetado, sem deixar de perceber a sua marca pessoal. O resultado é este belo livro, que muito nos ensina sobre a história do Brasil contemporâneo.

O caráter especial desse livro é a interdisciplinaridade das pesquisas.
