The purpose of this study was to examine the beliefs of high school principals in Texas on the impact extracurricular participation has on student academic performance. Specifically, feedback from high school principals was sought concerning 1) the significance extracurricular participation has on student academic performance; 2) the leadership efforts on their campus to promote extracurricular participation as a means to support student academic performance; 3) the quantity of extracurricular activities offered on their campus to meet the needs of all students that seek to participate; and 4)the attributes gleaned from participating in extracurricular activities that have the most positive impact on students. Research indicates that extracurricular activities, specifically involvement in sports, has been cited as an indication of higher grades, higher educational aspirations, more internal locus of control and a higher self-concept (Feigin, 1994). Research also claims school administrators have the ability to create and model school norms that cultivate and integrate extracurricular involvement while emphasizing the importance of individual academic achievement (George, 2012). Participants in this study included 173 Texas high school principals representing schools of varying student enrollments. A questionnaire with two questions was issued to the subjects seeking their beliefs on the impact extracurricular participation has on students. Ultimately, three findings ascended as productive results from this research. First, the responses revealed that the principals contributing to this study firmly agreed that extracurricular participation has a positive impact on students. Second, the results from this study showed that the school leaders that participated believe that students receive the greatest impact through extracurricular participation by the relationships those students build and from learning the importance of intangibles such as teamwork and commitment. Lastly, the feedback determined that the perceptions of the principals that participated in the study were generally consistent in their views on the impact extracurricular participation has on students, regardless of the enrollment size of the campus they lead. These three findings could have significance by expanding the body of knowledge related to the potential solutions extracurricular participation presents high school principals when they explore strategies to create support systems for students on their campus.

Pre-University Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Pedagogy - General, grade: 1.0, , language: English, abstract: This study was undertaken to find out what are the common experiences of students in participating extra-curricular activities. Also this study aims to know on how students cope up the difficulties they’ve experienced while joining extra-curricular activities. Only fifteen selected students are involved in the research, thus we recommend that they must gather more respondents in order for them to generalize the views and experiences of the students for having an extra-curricular in school. Based on the data that we gathered from all of our respondents that are involved in extra-curricular activities, many of them share the same experiences regarding their participation on ECA. They gain experiences that positively affect them and can be used to improve and enhance not only their grades but their skills and their personality as a student and as a person. For all the students who have extra-curricular activities, researchers recommend that if they will involve to this kind of activity, they should balance their time management in order to not affect their academic performance. In addition, for students who wants to have extra-curricular activities, we recommend that they should prioritize their academics first before other things so that they could not suffer difficulties especially when it comes to projects, assignments and tests.

Little is known about the mechanisms by which extracurricular participation in high school influences educational attainment in young adulthood. Also limited is an understanding of the different types of extracurricular participation and how various activities may manifest within the relationship. The purpose of this study was to examine the link between high school extracurricular participation and educational attainment, with social capital, parental expectations, and academic achievement presented as mediators. Additionally, the present study will explore socioeconomic differences in the proposed relationships. The sample consisted of 5,239 ninth through twelfth graders from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Structural equation modeling (SEM) and multiple-group SEM were used to test pathways. Extracurricular participation was categorized into sports participation, non-sport participation, mixed participation (including both sport and non-sport), and no participation. Social capital, a latent factor, was measured by the latent variables of family and school capital. Various indicators of family closeness and inclusion of school culture from survey items operationalize social capital. Parental expectations, another latent factor, was measured by one survey indicator using the question of how disappointed would your resident father and mother be if you did not graduate from college. Academic achievement was measured by grade point average and calculated by the average of self-reported grades in four subjects: English, math, social studies, and science. Educational level attained used seven levels ranging from less than 8th grade to beyond a Bachelor degree. Gender, race, and parent education were also included as covariates. Social capital, parental expectations, and high school academic achievement were all shown to be mediators between high school extracurricular participation and educational attainment. However, social capital's impact on educational attainment was indirect through GPA rather than direct. Sport showed better capacity to strengthen social capital than non-sport. However, non-sport participants achieved higher high school GPA than sport participants. On average, students involved in both sport and non-sport activities had more positive effects on all model variables than students involved in sports only. Results for socioeconomic comparison showed some evidence for the benefit of sport participation directly on educational level for low-income students. Practically speaking, the conclusion of the study is that students need to participate in a combination of activities that include both sport and non-sport to improve their chances of educational attainment.

"We can't do that in our school district." "I don't have time to add that to my curriculum." "We're fighting against impossible odds with these students." Sound familiar? School improvement can often feel like a losing battle, but it doesn't have to be. In this fully revised and updated second edition of The Learning Leader, Douglas B. Reeves helps leadership teams go beyond excuses to capitalize on their strengths, reduce their weaknesses, and reset their mindset and priorities to achieve unprecedented success. A critical key is recognizing student achievement as more than just a set of test scores. Reeves asserts that when leaders focus exclusively on results, they fail to measure and understand the importance of their own actions. He offers an alternative—the Leadership for Learning Framework, which helps leaders identify and distinguish among four different types of educators and provide more effective, tailored support to - "Lucky" educators, who achieve high results but don't understand how their actions influence achievement. - "Losing" educators, who achieve low results yet keep doing the same thing, expecting different outcomes. - "Learning" educators, who have not yet achieved the desired results but are working their way toward excellence. - "Leading" educators, who achieve high results and understand how their actions influence their success. Reeves stresses that effective leadership is neither a unitary skill nor a solitary activity. The Learning Leader helps leaders reconceptualize their roles in the school improvement process and motivate themselves and their colleagues to keep working to better serve their students.

The Educational Expansion And Persistent Inequality written by Yool Choi and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with categories.

Sociology and social stratification researchers have long been concerned with the issue of educational inequality, as education is considered a key tool for achieving social mobility and has been shown to be a powerful determinant of an individual's opportunities and quality of life in modern society (Blau and Duncan 1967; Hout 1988; Fischer and Hout 2006). Given the significant role that education plays in determining social mobility, there has emerged a dynamic of competition between social classes for attaining higher education. While marginalized classes seek to overcome their disadvantaged status through education, thus allowing them greater social mobility, higher classes continuously enact social closure behavior through education to secure their advantaged status. Therefore, education is one of the most competitive endeavors in modern society. In this dissertation, I explore the class dynamics of acquiring educational advantages given educational expansion in the United States and South Korea (hereafter Korea). Of key interest are strategies of securing social mobility through education that entail a move away from public education and increased reliance on resources outside of formal schooling. In this dissertation, I examine the effect of three extra-curricular activities on education and labor market outcomes, with a particular focus on the transitional periods of entry into and exit from postsecondary education, along with patterns of student retention and attrition during the years of college enrollment. Specifically, the first chapter of my dissertation uses data from the Educational Longitudinal Survey of 2002 to look at the average and heterogeneous effects of shadow education on SAT scores. The data include extensive information on not only students' socioeconomic background, but also high school information such as GPA, educational aspirations and motivation, which is helpful in estimating the propensity to shadow education and the relationship between shadow education and SAT scores. I use PSM to examine the average relationship between shadow education and SAT achievement, paying attention to the issue of pretreatment heterogeneity. Also, using the stratification-multilevel and smoothing-differencing methods, I examine how the effects of shadow education vary according to likelihood of receiving shadow education. I find that shadow education has significant positive effects on SAT scores and that the effects vary by individual propensity to use shadow education. The pattern of treatment effect heterogeneity indicates positive selection, which indicates that those who are more likely to use shadow education--those who are socioeconomically advantaged--benefit more from shadow education than those who are less likely to use it. Also, public resources such as school prep courses, books, and videos, neither alleviate the effects of private shadow education nor change the pattern of the treatment effect heterogeneity. My findings suggest that shadow education is an emerging mechanism that exacerbates educational inequality in the United States. In the second chapter, using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth from 1997, I examine the relationship between college student employment and dropouts. Since NLSY97 is surveyed annually and includes extensive information about students' educational backgrounds such as high school academic achievements, college financial aid, and the respondent's educational history, it is particularly useful to examine how student employment affects first year attrition and bachelor's degree completion. Using PSM, I estimate the average effects of treatment on the treated and I verify evidence of the treatment effect heterogeneity of student employment on college dropout by using the stratification-multilevel and smoothing-differencing methods. In this chapter, utilizing complex counterfactuals, (e.g., intense work [20 hours or more] vs. moderate work [less than 20 hours] vs. no work), I also examine variations in the effect of work intensity on dropout. In this study, I find that engaging in intense work has deleterious effects on first-year retention and on graduation within six years; however, the effects of intense work vary by likelihood of participation in intense work. The most advantaged students--who are least likely to engage in intense work--experience the most negative consequences from intense work, while such activity is less harmful to those from disadvantaged social backgrounds. I also find that this effect heterogeneity can be attributed to different financial situations and reasons for working between advantaged and disadvantaged students. This finding has two key implications. First, advantaged students should carefully consider engaging in intense work, as it can negatively affect bachelor's degree completion. Second, although the effect of intense work is less harmful for disadvantaged students, providing sufficient financial aid to them is still an important task, as this could help them to balance the intensity of work and school life. The final chapter of my dissertation aims to examine the effects of English training abroad (hereafter ETA) on labor market outcomes in Korea. To examine how ETA affects employment and wages, I conduct survival analysis and quantile regression using data from the Korea Employment Information Service's 2007 Graduate Occupational Mobility Survey. The key finding of this study is that even though the average effects of ETA seem to be modest as most prior research has indicated, ETA does appear to have substantial positive effects on getting a good job and earning higher wages. ETA proved especially helpful for those who did not attend elite colleges. That is, ETA is a useful tool for non-elite students to supplement their weak formal education. Based on these findings, I conclude that ETA has a substantial impact on labor market outcomes in South Korea, and thus labor market opportunities are strongly determined by an socioeconomic background, as the cost of participation in ETA presents a barrier to entry for individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

Promising Practices For Family And Community Involvement During High School written by Lee Shumow and has been published by IAP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-01 with Education categories.

This volume focuses on family and community connections with education during the high school years. In comparison to the wealth of attention that has been focused on involving parents with schools during the early childhood and elementary school years, less attention has been directed to parents of high school students and fewer educational programs have been developed to forge connections between family, community, students, and educators at the high school level. Researchers have found that family and community have a very significant impact on student achievement and on post secondary attainment despite the considerable decline in parental involvement by high school. Educators know that family and community factors are important for student success in high school while, at the same time, they identify working with families and connecting the curriculum to the community as difficult. Currently, scholars from various fields are involved in conducting research to better understand how schools can best enhance the education of the young through interactions with students’ families and communities. Educational practitioners also are pioneering efforts to involve and serve families as well as to connect with communities in order to enrich the educational environment and enlarge opportunities for students, teachers, families, and community members. This volume, which will be of interest to both researchers and educators, reflects the interdisciplinary nature of the field. The contributors were recruited from diverse fields and workplaces. Chapters are organized into two sections to reflect whether the genesis of the work described is from theory and research or from practice and policy. Chapters originating from theory and research address: adolescent development and family involvement; the role of family and community in extracurricular activity participation; and the evolution of trust relationships in school community partnership development. Chapters originating from practice and policy address: transition to high school, using the community as a “text” for learning; career education partnerships with businesses, post secondary institutions, and community organizations; as well as, state policies and programs that support parental involvement in postsecondary planning.

"This article reviews the contemporary literature on extracurricular activity participation, focusing on patterns of participation, academic achievement, substance abuse, psychological adjustment, and young adult outcomes. Throughout the article, many different groups are referenced to, with the majority of those surveyed from various middle and high schools around the country. The review indicated that the associations between extracurricular activity participation and these outcomes are mostly positive, with some limitations due to unmonitored and unmeasurable variables. Adolescents who participated in ECAs reported higher grades, more positive attitudes toward schools, and higher academic aspirations once demographic characteristics and prior adjustment were controlled. In contrast, results were examined with information related to participation in team sports were linked to positive educational trajectories and to high rates of involvement in risky behaviors. The author suggests application for information from this review as well as future research including discovering new methods for measuring activities and attitudes related toward student's attitude and their school experiences."--leaf 3.

With over 70,000 copies of the first edition in print, this radical treatise on public education has been a New Society Publishers’ bestseller for 10 years! Thirty years in New York City’s public schools led John Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory schooling does little but teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine. This second edition describes the wide-spread impact of the book and Gatto’s "guerrilla teaching." John Gatto has been a teacher for 30 years and is a recipient of the New York State Teacher of the Year award. His other titles include A Different Kind of Teacher (Berkeley Hills Books, 2001) and The Underground History of American Education (Oxford Village Press, 2000).
