Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1904, Vol. 16 The matrix as an aid in restoring contours in the posterior teeth, has become indispensable to the operators of the present day, and why should the usefulness of the principle be overlooked in its application to the successful management of interproximal cavities, and corner restorations in the anterior teeth? Its advantages are manifest. It restores a missing wall in many cases, and gives the operator something additional to the pulpal wall to build against. The general conformity of the matrix to the shape of the tooth serves as a guide to the contour of the filling to be inserted. It facilitates the condensation of certain points in the filling, often difficult of access, e.g., in an interproxmial filling extending from the labial surface through to the lingual surface; that portion of the filling in the incisal region is often only sufficiently condensed with great difficulty, but where the matrix is employed it is rendered easy of access, and the required force may be applied without fear of dislodgment of the filling. It facilitates the finishing of the filling to a marked degree, inasmuch as the gold against the matrix is smooth, and there is less surplus. It enables the operator to secure a perfectly condensed contact point. Where teeth are loose or tender, whether caused by over-rapid separation or naturally so; it will be found very useful as a means of staying them. In the hands of a careful and thorough operator it will be readily appreciated that operations may be more accurately and rapidly performed. Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1889, Vol. 1 In a paper read before the New York Odontological Society, in December, 1875, I ventured to give one of the quickest cases of regulating the teeth on record, done without plates or ligatures, and comprising ideas as old as Hun ter and as modern as Tomes. The case was a unique one, inasmuch as it was one where the patient, a young man eighteen years old, had determined to have the teeth extracted and artificial substitutes inserted. I am aware that other modes of treatment might have been used by those who could command a large fee, but as the case was one which I volunteered as an experiment, and for which no reasonable fee was expected, I made choice of two evils - the one I chose having proved to be a blessing in disguise. His later scientific communications in so far as they were related to the problem of dental caries did not deal directly with its etiology, as he apparently regarded his earlier researches on that point as being conclusive - for, writing in l900, he says: Caries results from the accumulation and retention of particles of food between or in fissures, depressions, etc., upon the free surfaces of the teeth, which places we call retention centers. If, in filling a cavity in a tooth, we do not thereby obliterate the retention center which previously 'gave rise to decay, there is every reason to suppose-that decay may make its reappear ance in the course of time. Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1898, Vol. 10 It is said that one of the kings of Spain was afflicted with an offensive breath, to remedy which the physician advised His Majesty to chew a composition of gum-arabic, ambergris and other perfumes, the use of which occasioned a great expenditure of saliva. The courtiers from the vanity of imitating their superiors, went very generally into the same customs. The consequence was, that those who also followed the fashion with ardor, lost their appetites and became emaciated, and consumption increased so fast among them that the practice was forbidden by royal edict. Those who do not eject the saliva from tobacco, but swallow the mixture, usually find it induces faintness, palpitation of the heart, trembling of the limbs, and, sooner or later, some chronic trouble.
