Don Rosa is one of the world?s most popular cartoonists. For over 20 years he kept up the duck universe of his idol Carl Barks with his stories about Scrooge McDuck, Donald Duck and the Beagle Boys Inc. He is adored for his detailed duck adventures. His biography, 'Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck', earned him immortality and an Eisner Award, the world?s most important comics prize.00But who is the man behind the ducks? "I STILL GET CHILLS!" knows the answers. It is published in honour of Don Rosa?s 66th and Scrooge McDuck?s 70th birthday. German public broadcast journalist, Alex Jakubowski, and Lois Lammerhuber, one of the best photographers of his generation, spent a lot of time with the star cartoonist on his fantastic, remote home in the wide reaches of Kentucky. Surrounded by one of the largest comics collections in North America, White Castle fast food memorabilia, amazing libraries of books, films and CDs, countless huge monitors, exquisite vintage cars and an enviable pinball collection, they talked for days in the artist?s studio, traced Don Rosa?s childhood on trips to Louisville and discovered the many facets of a man who has become almost as legendary as a passionate collector as he has for his art as a cartoonist.00And what?s more: Don Rosa himself lent a hand with this book, commenting on photos and drawings, creating typical Don Rosa quotes and turning it into a unique Don Rosa work.

The changes Cuba experienced following the collapse of the Soviet Union compelled Cuban filmmakers to rethink the values developed after the 1959 Castro revolution. Long-forgotten genres re-emerged, established auteurs incorporated new aesthetics into their films and an influx of foreign capital led to the repackaging of revolutionary ideology into more visually attractive narratives. Films such as Alice in Wondertown (1991), Strawberry and Chocolate (1993) and Juan of the Dead (2011) stirred controversy, criticized revolutionary discourse and helped establish new models that allowed post–Castro cinema to find global audiences on an unprecedented scale. This book offers a detailed analysis of key post–Cold War Cuban films. Recurrent sociopolitical tropes are examined to reveal how Cuban cinema reflects the turbulent changes in the island.

Creation Translation And Adaptation In Donald Duck Comics written by Peter Cullen Bryan and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-17 with Social Science categories.

This book examines the scope and nature of Donald Duck and his family's popularity in Germany, in contrast to the diminished role they play in America. This is achieved through examination of the respective fan communities, business practices, and universality of the characters. This work locates and understands the aspects of translation and adaptation that inform the spread of culture that have as yet been underexplored in the context of comic books. It represents a large-scale attempt to incorporate adaptation and translation studies into comics studies, through a lens of fan studies (used to examine both the American and German fan communities, as well as the work of Don Rosa). This work builds on the efforts of other scholars, including Janet Wasko and Illaria Meloni, while expanding the historical understanding of what might be the world’s best-selling comics. Peter Cullen Bryan is Lecturer at Pennsylvania State University, USA. His areas of study include American Studies, Intercultural Communications, and 21st Century American culture, emphasizing comic art and fan communities. His research has appeared in the Journal of Fandom Studies, The Journal of American Culture, and Popular Culture Studies Journal. He serves on the boards of the Mid-Atlantic Popular Culture Association and the Popular Culture Association, as well as Secretary for the Intercultural Communication section of the International Communication Association.

Cold Enough For Snow written by Jessica Au and has been published by Giramondo Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-01 with Fiction categories.

The inaugural winner of The Novel Prize, an international biennial award established by Giramondo (Australia), Fitzcarraldo Editions (UK) and New Directions (USA). Cold Enough for Snow was unanimously chosen from over 1500 entries. A novel about the relationship between life and art, and between language and the inner world – how difficult it is to speak truly, to know and be known by another, and how much power and friction lies in the unsaid, especially between a mother and daughter. A young woman has arranged a holiday with her mother in Japan. They travel by train, visit galleries and churches chosen for their art and architecture, eat together in small cafés and restaurants and walk along the canals at night, on guard against the autumn rain and the prospect of snow. All the while, they talk, or seem to talk: about the weather, horoscopes, clothes and objects; about the mother’s family in Hong Kong, and the daughter’s own formative experiences. But uncertainties abound. How much is spoken between them, how much is thought but unspoken? Cold Enough for Snow is a reckoning and an elegy: with extraordinary skill, Au creates an enveloping atmosphere that expresses both the tenderness between mother and daughter, and the distance between them. 'So calm and clear and deep, I wished it would flow on forever.' — Helen Garner 'Rarely have I been so moved, reading a book: I love the quiet beauty of Cold Enough for Snow and how, within its calm simplicity, Jessica Au camouflages incredible power.' — Edouard Louis 'Au’s prose is elegant and measured. In descriptions of bracing clarity she evokes ‘shaking delicate impressions’ of worlds within worlds that are symbolic of the parts of ourselves we keep hidden and those we choose to lay bare. Put simply, this novel is an intricate and multi-layered work of art — a complex and profound meditation on identity, familial bonds and our inability to fully understand ourselves, those we love and the world around us.' — Jacqui Davies, Books+Publishing
