This book is a collection of the proceedings of the study seminar held in Verona on 14 November 2003. This was the occasion for the presentation of the results of archive research performed by young researchers on the Jewish presence in numerous cities and smaller towns of the Venetian hinterland in the fifteenth century (Vicenza, Verona, Treviso, Feltre, and the minor centres of the Polesine and Verona and Vicenza territory). The various themes that are developed though attentive and documented analysis include: the autonomous initiative of the civic communities in the relation with the Jewish moneylenders and the attitude of Venice, divided between protection and the anti-Jewish tensions that were widespread among the lagoon nobility; the encounter and dialectic between the Ashkenazi and Italian components in the communities settled within the cities and hamlets of Veneto; the difference of the social and cultural climate between the first and second half of the fifteenth century, marked by incisive Franciscan preaching and attempts at expulsion from the cities; a look 'from the inside' which opens up the role of women in the economic life of the Jewish communities. Over twenty years after the convention on 'The Jews and Venice' promoted by the Fondazione Cini, these contributions illustrate the revival of study and the ever-present need for comparison and exchange on the issue of the Jewish presence in Italy.

This book is the first epoch-spanning study on Jewish participation in the Italian women’s movement, focussing in a transnational perspective on the experience of Italian-Jewish protagonists in Liberal Italy, during the First World War and the Fascist dictatorship until 1945. Drawing on ego-documents, contemporary journals and Jewish community archives, as well as records by the police and public authorities, it examines the tensions within the emancipation process between participation and exclusion. The book argues that the racial laws from 1938 did not represent the sudden end of an idyllic integration, but rather the climax of a long-term development. Social marginalization, the persecution of Jewish rights, and the assault on Jewish lives during fascism are analysed distinctly from the perspective of Jewish women. In spite of their significant influence on the transnational orientation of the Italian women’s movement, their emancipation as women and Jews remained incomplete.

La storia degli ebrei in Italia è antichissima e affascinante. È difficile immaginare il nostro paese, la sua storia, la sua identità senza il loro contributo. La storia degli ebrei in Italia è antichissima: nessuna comunità in Occidente ha una presenza così costante, dalla Roma antica fino a oggi. Soprattutto, la storia degli ebrei in Italia è una storia fortemente specifica e in parte diversa rispetto a quella dei centri della diaspora europea. Distinta da una netta continuità attraverso oltre venti secoli; prima culla, all'inizio dell'era volgare, dell'ebraismo diasporico. Caratterizzata da una forte integrazione nella società cristiana, sia nel Medioevo che nei secoli successivi, nonostante le mura dei ghetti; poco toccata, nei secoli, dai fenomeni più estremi di antisemitismo; segnata da una forte partecipazione degli ebrei, nel XIX secolo, alla costruzione risorgimentale; e infine colpita durante l'occupazione nazista da arresti e deportazioni a cui partecipano attivamente i fascisti della Repubblica di Salò. E ancora, almeno fino al secondo dopoguerra, poco impegnata nel progetto sionista e anche successivamente poco coinvolta in una concreta emigrazione in Israele, anche se molto condizionata e segnata dalla presenza dello Stato ebraico. Una storia che, a essere compendiata in una sola frase, potrebbe esser definita come 'una storia italiana'.

La storia bimillenaria delle comunità ebraiche in Italia è la straordinaria avventura, tanto tormentata quanto poco nota, di una minoranza (poche decine di migliaia di persone) che ha saputo radicarsi capillarmente in tutto il territorio del nostro paese, dalle Alpi alla Sicilia, dal Friuli alla Sardegna. E che, malgrado le umiliazioni e le vessazioni subite da parte delle autorità politiche ed ecclesiastiche locali, è riuscita a salvaguardare sempre le proprie tradizioni e la propria identità culturale senza isolarsi e rinchiudersi in se stessa, ma anzi partecipando attivamente alla vita sociale ed economica dei luoghi in cui si è insediata. Di questa singolare vicenda, che rappresenta un caso unico nel panorama europeo, Riccardo Calimani ricostruisce qui una prima ampia parte: dalla libera alleanza degli ebrei con la Roma repubblicana e dai secoli dell'esilio, dopo la distruzione di Gerusalemme (70 e.v.) voluta dall'imperatore romano Tito, sino al rimescolamento delle varie comunità ebraiche del Vecchio Continente provocato dalla loro espulsione dalla Penisola iberica alla fine del XV secolo. Il vero punto di svolta di questo complesso itinerario è costituito dall¿editto di Costantino (313), che, legittimando la cristianità, inaugura la lunga stagione dell'incontro- scontro tra giudaismo della diaspora e Chiesa di Roma. Un rapporto ambivalente che si riflette nella costante oscillazione nel trattamento da essa riservato per tutto il Medioevo (e oltre) agli ebrei, condannati come popolo maledetto per non aver riconosciuto in Cristo il messia, e nel contempo protetti in quanto testimoni della verità del Vecchio Testamento, secondo la lettura teologica agostiniana. Nell'ambito di questo paradosso trovano spazio l'aperta discriminazione, sancita dal IV Concilio Lateranense (1215) con l'imposizione della rotella come segno distintivo, e le ricorrenti persecuzioni, di volta in volta fomentate dalle infamanti accuse di avvelenare i pozzi per seminare la pestilenza, o da quelle di praticare l¿infanticidio ritu ale o dalla forsennata propaganda antigiudaica dei frati predicatori. Ma anche atteggiamenti di benevola tolleranza che hanno consentito agli ebrei, benché esclusi dalle corporazioni gravati da pesanti tributi e da uno status giuridico penalizzante, di raggiungere l'eccellenza nell¿arte medica e di svolgere una funzione finanziaria (il prestito su pegno) decisiva sia per l'economia locale sia per le dissestate finanze dei diversi sovrani. In questa monumentale opera di ricomposizione delle tracce disperse della presenza ebraica in ogni città, paese e borgo d'Italia, che ha come sfondo tutti i più grandiosi e drammatici scenari (le crociate, l'Inquisizione, la nascita e il crollo degli imperi) della storia dell'Occidente, Calimani individua nella ricchezza della tradizione giudaica la forza che non solo ha preservato lidentità minacciata degli esuli, ma ha alimentato un dialogo reciprocamente fecondo con la cultura italiana ed europea.

This book investigates one of the major issues that runs through the history of Italian Judaism in the aftermath of emancipation: the correlation between integration, seen as the acquisition of citizenship and culture without renouncing Jewish identity, and assimilation, intended as an open refusal of Judaism of any participation in the community. On account of that correlation, identity has become one of the crucial problems in the history of the Italian Jewish community. This volume aims to discuss the setting of construction and formation--the family-- and focuses on women's experiences, specifically. Indeed, women were called through emancipation to ensure the continuity of Jewish religious and cultural heritage. It speaks to the growing interest for Women's and Gender Studies in Italy, and for the research on women's organizations which testify to the strong presence of Jewish women in the emancipation movement. These women formed a sisterhood that fought to obtain rights that were until then only accorded to men, and they were deeply socially engaged in such a way that was crucial to the overall process of the integration of Jews into Italian society.
