Excerpt from Fruit, United States Foreign Trade Related to Production 1910-1949: A Statistical Handbook Contrary to general opinion the United States was a net importer of fruit dming the four decades with the exception of the 1934 season and the three war years, 1942, 1943, and 1944. Of course, the relatively large annual imports of bananas were the principal factor. If bwanas are excluded from the imported volume, the country would have been on a net export basis for the entire period except in the 1921 season when domestic production was reduced sharply by a heavy late frost. Including bananas, the United States had available for consumption in the 1910 season the equivalent of percent more fruit than was produced domestically while in 1949 the net import was percent of moduction. For the period 1910 to 1922, inclusive, net imports ranged between percent (1918) and percent (1921) of: production, while for the favorable export period, 1923 to 1938, inclusive, the range was between percent (1934) export surplus to percent (1929) net imports. For the World War II and subsequent years, 1939 to 1949: inclusive, the supply of fruit available for consumption varied from percent (1943) less than woduction to percent (1940) more than production. Prospects For Foreign Trade In Fruits Vegetables Tree Nuts written by Usda Foreign Agricultural Service and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-20 with categories.

Excerpt from Prospects for Foreign Trade in Fruits, Vegetables, Tree Nuts: March 1961 The United States production of fruit of all kinds for the 1960-61 marketing season is about 5 percent below that of last year. For' the most part, U. 8. Fruit prices this season are higher, and export availabilities not as large as last year. Foreign competitive of -citrus fruits, dried fruits, and tree nuts in 1960-61 appear to be slightly smaller than in 1959-60, while competitive supplies of fresh and canned deciduous fruits are heavier. Demand conditions in Western Europe remain excellent, although not much additional progress has been made in removing barriers to trade in fruit commodities. The reduction in U. 8. Fruit availabilities and continuation of some trade restrictions will result in smaller total U. 8. Fruit exports in 1960-61 than last season. In the case of vegetables, total exports to Canada should exceed those of 1959 -60 if there is no damage to the U. S. Winter vegetable crop. Similarly, imports into the United States are expected to be smaller this year than last. Mediterranean orange production in 1960-61 is expected to be slightly less than last season, in view of smaller crops in prospect in Spain and Italy. This year's winter lemon cr0p in Italy is expected to be somewhat smaller, although the summer crop will be larger. The relatively favorable prices for fresh and processed oranges and grapefruit prevailing in the United States will tend to inhibit offshore exports in 1960-61. Western European crops of apples and pears for the 1960-61 marketing season are substantially larger than last year, while the U. S. Cr0ps are smaller. Most Western European countries this season are not permitting imports of these fruits from North America until very late in the season, in order to protect prices for home producers. Thus, both economic conditions and quantitative restrictions indicate smaller exports of U. S. Fresh apples and pears in 1960-61 than last season. World production and trade of canned deciduous fruits were at record levels in 1959-60. The U. S. Canned fruit supplies in 1960-61 are at about the same levels as in 1959-60, and exports are expected to approximate those of last season despite heavier foreign supplies and increased ocean freight rates. The United Kingdom increased its import quota from the dollar area by about one -third. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
