In this first study of art, law, and the legislator, Jonathan Ribner provides a revealing look at French art from 1789 to 1848, the period in which constitutional law was established in France. Drawing on several disciplines, he discusses how each of the early constitutional regimes in France used imagery suggesting the divine origin and sacred character of its laws. Primarily a study of art and politics, Broken Tablets discusses painting, sculpture, prints, and medals (many reproduced here for the first time), as well as contemporary literature, including the poetry of Alfred de Vigny, Alphonse de Lamartine, and Victor Hugo. Ribner assesses the ways in which legislation imagery became an instrument of political propaganda, and he clearly illuminates the cult of the law as it became personalized under Napoleon, monarchist under the Restoration, and defensive under Louis-Phillipe.

Cette étude est l'aboutissement de nos recherches à la suite d'une carence constatée, face à la problématique sur la question fondamentale liée à la protection et à la gestion de droits d'auteur et des droits voisin, particulièrement en République Démocratique du Congo et, en Afrique en général. C'est la raison pour laquelle, celle-ci se veut être une contribution pour la vulgarisation des notions fondamentales du droit d'auteur et, qui embrasse le droit d'auteur sous ces aspects culturel, technique, économique et social. Elle propose, au regard des questions traitées, des reformes que les autorités publiques sont censées d'opérer dans le secteur de la protection et de la gestion du droit d'auteur, en tenant compte des enjeux du droit d'auteur en rapport avec les industries culturelles et créatives d'une part et la place du droit d'auteur dans l'espace OHADA. Cet ouvrage répond également, au souci d'établir une politique d'intégration de l'enseignement technique du droit d'auteur dans le cursus scientifique dans les établissements supérieurs et universitaires de la République Démocratique du Congo, en particulier, et de l'Afrique en général. Il conviendra, à ce sujet, d'approfondir les questions de techniques du droit d'auteur, en complément des questions juridiques, lorsqu'il s'agira des grandes écoles de formation artistique et des sciences sociales et de communication ainsi que des facultés de droit.

The Programme for the third Symposium on the International Art Trade and Law was developed by the Institute for International Business Law and Practice of the International Chamber of Commerce and its Chairman, Prof. Pierre Lalive who has also provided the Preface to this Volume. Under the auspices of the Institute, a Questionnaire was formulated and circulated. The collected materials were reproduced and distributed at the Symposium by the Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce. Reporters from thirteen countries responded to the Questionnaire. On the basis of these National Reports, General Reports were prepared and presented at the Symposium.
