All cultures appear to share the belief that they do things ‘correctly’, while others, until proven otherwise, are assumed to be ignorant or barbaric. Les habitants de toute région partagent des valeurs et des pratiques, des coutumes qui leur donnent une identité culturelle. Elle représente pour eux la façon normale de penser et d'agir. Ces cultures régionales et nationales influencent aussi le fonctionnement des entreprises de ces mêmes milieux. C'et pourquoi la recherche en management interculturel recommande le plus souvent l'adaptation de la gestion des entreprises aux différences culturelles afin d'éviter tout dysfonctionnement causé par un manque de respect des normes culturelles. Cela est cependant sans tenir compte de la taille des entreprises et ce conseil semble beaucoup plus juste pour les plus grandes que pour les plus petites entreprises. Dans ces dernières, la personnalité du dirigeant a une influence considérable sur le style de gestion de l'entreprise. Cela ne signifie cependant pas que l'on puisse ignorer les influences culturelles régionales. L'analyse de la littérature ainsi que l'observation des motivations et des pratiques des gestion de 220 dirigeants de P.M.E. installés en Europe (Allemagne, Espagne, France, Pays-Bas) nous amène à développer une approche plus contingente du management interculturel et plus spécifique a la P.M.E. La notion de positionnement culturel prend alors toute son importance.
