"When Steven Laffoley first arrived on the rocky shores of Nova Scotia, he discovered some rather exotic food fare: deep-fried seafoods, oiled crustaceans, and an otherworldly, post-beer, Middle Eastern fusion food called The Donair. They all stimulated the appetite and captured his attention. He was transfixed. Far from the canned ravioli and Jell-O salads of his youth, Laffoley discovered that Nova Scotian food could be fresh and fascinating, frivolous and fun. As a result, he was determined to change his wayward ways about food and learn more. It just took him thirty-odd years to get around to it. When he did, he did so with a true cook's call to action. Laffoley began making meals from real food and made a genuine effort to understand real food's real relationship to the people and the place. He wielded sharpened knives, wooden ladles, and steel whisks with the agility of a seasoned chef, and in doing so discovered that he actually had a gift. Indeed, he possessed the exact gift his mother had. Not only was he a bad cook - he was a spectacularly bad cook. Still, Bluenose fare had captured his imagination, so he remained undeterred. Determined to improve his food knowledge and cooking skills, Steven chopped, diced, sautéed, and fried his way to meals fit to consume, though, sadly, his culinary expertise remained (spectacularly) limited. However, his interest in how food shaped the people and culture of Nova Scotia only grew. So, no longer wanting to harm sentient life with his cooking, he set off with notebook and pen to discover the real story of food in Nova Scotia. What he found was a 10,000-year-old tale in turns fascinating, funny, and just downright strange."--

"My reason for being in the tavern was important. I wanted to better understand the history of beer in Nova Scotia. Or more specifically, I wanted to know how it was that Nova Scotians became the foremost makers and drinkers of the stuff. In truth, Canada had long ago tumbled down the consumption of beer per capita mountain among the world?s nations, finding itself in paltry thirty-fourth place, lagging far behind beer-drinking powerhouses like Mexico and Botswana. And Nova Scotia, well, on average, Nova Scotians consumed only about eight litres per capita of beer per year, placing beery Bluenosers a scant eleventh among the provinces and territories, though we did have brew house bragging rights over the drinking denizens of Nunavut." After extensive initial research, author Steven Laffoley discovered that the history of beer in Nova Scotia was as cloudy as a good pumpkin lager or a cold wheat beer on a dark winter's day. So with an intrepid, albeit mildly inebriated, explorer's courage, he packed up his notebook and set off in search of Nova Scotia's beer-filled past, which, as it turned out, was far stranger than he expected. It was a fascinating tale of heartwarming heroes, despicable villains, astounding secrets, and a gruesome murder or two, all with the added amusements of Victorian cross-dressing tavern patrons and a few goats with a passion for chewing tobacco and ale. And now the story can be told. You may want to pour a good glass of IPA for this.

Pulling No Punches written by Steven Edwin Laffoley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-10 with Boxers (Sports) categories.

Heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey called Sam Langford from Weymouth Falls, Nova Scotia, “The greatest fighter we’ve ever had.” And champion Jack Johnson stated he “he was the toughest little son-of-a-bitch that ever lived.” Celebrated New York boxing writer Hype Igoe said he was “the greatest fighter, pound for pound, who ever lived,” while New York sports writer Joe Williams said he “was probably the best the ring ever saw.” Langford was so good that many boxers refused to fight him, so good that he took bouts with bigger men just to get a match, so good that he once fought the greatest boxer of his age, Jack Johnson, who was forty pounds heavier and a good foot taller—and still went the distance. Yet, for all the ferocity of his talent, Sam Langford (1883-1956) could not outbox fistic fate. From his first bout in 1902 until his last a quarter century later, he battled boxing’s colour barrier that kept him from being world champion in three different weight classes. Still, he refused to be knocked down and relentlessly pursued a title shot until he was nearly forty. When, in 1923, he approached Jack Kearns, the manager of then heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey, for a title bout, the wily Kearns looked over the nearly blind, well-past-his-prime boxer, and shook his head. “We were looking for someone easier,” he sighed. He was just that good. When Langford could no longer get his title shot, he retired from the ring in 1926 and soon faded from the public mind—until the serious compilers of lists that recognize boxing’s all-time greatest began including his name, and he found himself becoming a legend. His official record says he fought 250 bouts, but he remembered fighting more than 500. And he loved to talk about them all, loved the stories that shaped the contours of his life and loved the absolute truth and less-than-certain tales that wove themselves into his boxing legend. Of course, this was as it should have been, because for him, great boxing was as much about the battles’ tales as it was about the battles themselves. This is the story of Sam Langford.

The Halifax Poor House Fire written by Steven Edwin Laffoley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-15 with Fires categories.

Just before midnight, on November 6, 1882, the Halifax Poor House, an outsized Dickensian building situated in the south end of the city, caught fire and burned to the ground. Of the more than 400 inmates who slept inside that night, 31 people--the aged, the ill, and the insane--were all left behind, where they burned to death. The fire was then, and remains still, the most deadly the city has ever seen. Two days later, conceding to a furious public outcry, an inquest was held to determine the cause of the fire and to identify those who were to blame. At least, that was the promise. Instead, as testimony was heard, a shadowy bias woven into the fabric of the city and times began to change the nature of the inquest, and the dark side of the age of Queen Victoria made itself felt. From award-winning author Steven Laffoley comes another Victorian Halifax cold-case investigation, a thrilling exploration of a crime set in a time of the rapacious British Empire and American robber barons, of Social Darwinism and Jack the Ripper.

The author of the best-selling Just Bento Cookbook is back with hundreds of delicious new Japanese-lunchbox-style recipes—including many low-carb, vegetarian, and vegan options—that can be made quickly and without a lot of fuss. The passion for bento boxes shows no signs of letting up. Leading the way in popularizing these compact and portable boxed meals has been Makiko Itoh, blogger extraordinaire and author of the perennial bestseller, The Just Bento Cookbook. Itoh was instrumental in spreading the word that bentos are perfect for busy adults-on-the-go—they don’t have to be cute and they don’t have to take a lot of planning or prep time in order to be tasty, nutritious, and economical. In THE JUST BENTO COOKBOOK 2: Make-Ahead Lunches and More, Itoh offers hundreds of new recipes for bento-friendly dishes. The premise of this second cookbook is that anyone can make delicious, healthy bentos quickly and easily. Itoh focuses on three types of bentos with specific and appealing benefits: bentos that can be made ahead of time, “express” bentos that can be put together fast, using components right off the shelf or out of the refrigerator, and bentos for special dietary needs. Full-color photos accompany the directions and showcase the finished dishes. THE JUST BENTO COOKBOOK 2 opens with Itoh’s basic bento rules, revised to reflect comments she’s heard from her many fans after the first book came out. “Build Up Your Stash” explains why having some items ready to pack up and go is the key to stress-free bento-making. Here are tips on making foods that store well, organizing storage space, the best containers to use for different foods, what store-bought items to have on hand, etc. The first section, “Make-Ahead Bentos,” features recipes for a wide variety of dishes that can be prepared the night before or first thing in the morning. Here are different kinds of meatballs and burgers, including both Western versions and Japanese variations; mouth-watering chicken, pork, beef, egg and fish dishes; a section on “Tofu and Vegan” treats such as Ginger Tofu Teriyaki and Green Lentils and Brown Rice; and recipes for Rice Sandwiches such as Egg-wrapped Rice Sandwich with Bacon Rice Filling. A special section of Low Carb recipes based on shirataki noodles and konnyaku (konjac) offers fun and creative ways to use this no-cal, no-carb, no-sugar, gluten-free “miracle” noodle in dishes like Rice and Shirataki Pilaf with Shrimp, Shirataki Chicken “Ramen” in a Lunch Jar, and Shirataki with Sesame. “Express Bentos” presents very quick-to-assemble boxes comprised of foods that don’t require detailed recipes and don’t rely on pre-homemade items. From Mediterranean Pasta and Yakisoba bentos to a Deconstructed Taco Salad and Stir-fry Bento, the ideas here will prove to be lifesavers for busy people who need to get out of the house in a hurry but still want their flavorful, filling, and healthy lunch. Other new and exciting additions to this second volume include an entire section of recipes for Vegetable Side Dishes (Roast Asparagus with Balsamic Vinegar, Spicy Broccoli, and Potato and Corn Salad), and one for Japanese Vegetable Side Dishes (Buttery Kabocha Squash, Crunchy Stir-fried Soy Beans, Hijiki Seaweed with Garlic). Recipes for different versions of dashi will help readers keep a supply of this staple ingredient at the ready. And advice on tools and equipment, types of bento boxes and accessories, as well as a glossary and resource section, will ensure that preparing bentos is as enjoyable as eating them.

Kiss The Joy As It Flies written by Sheree Fitch and has been published by Nimbus+ORM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-01 with Fiction categories.

The award-winning, bestselling author takes readers on “a thrilling joy-ride through a week in the life of a self-made woman facing her deepest fears” (Sea and Be Scene). With all the wisdom, humor and joy we’ve come to expect from Sheree Fitch, Kiss the Joy as It Flies, first published in 2008, marked the well-loved author’s move from children’s literature to adult fiction. Set in the fictional Maritime town of Odell, with a cast of exasperating but lovable characters, Kiss the Joy as It Flies promises to be a remarkable debut and a reader’s favorite. Panic-stricken by the news that she needs exploratory surgery, forty-eight-year-old Mercy Beth Fanjoy drafts a monumental to-do list and sets about putting her messy life in order. Among other things (hide the vibrator!), she’s determined to finally uncover the identity of her secret admirer; reconnect with long-lost friend and rival Teeny Gaudet; and, most importantly, get her hands on the note her father left before committing suicide all those years ago. But tidying up the edges of her life means the past comes rushing back to haunt her and the present keeps throwing up more to-dos. Between fits of weeping and laughter, ranting and bliss, Mercy must contemplate the meaning of life in the face of her own death. In a week filled with the riot of an entire life, nothing turns out the way she’d expected. “Kiss the Joy as It Flies is funny and heartbreaking and thought-provoking and sometimes all three—and more—at once. Fitch made us wait a long time for her first novel, but it was worth it. It’s a rare and lovely book.” —January Magazine

For A Taste of Acadie, Melvin Gallant and Marielle Cormier-Boudreau travelled all over Acadia, from the Gaspé Peninsula to Cape Breton, from the tip of Prince Edward Island to the Magdalen Islands, and around northern New Brunswick and southern Nova Scotia. They gathered the culinary secrets of traditional Acadian cooks while there was still time, and then they adapted more than 150 recipes for today's kitchens. First published in 1991, A Taste of Acadie, the popular English translation of the best-selling Cuisine traditionalle en Acadie, is available once again. The indigenous cuisine of Acadia is a distant relative of French home cooking, born of necessity and created from what was naturally available. Roast porcupine or seal-fat cookies may not be to every modern diner's taste, but the few recipes of this nature in A Taste of Acadie hint at the ingenuity of women who fed their families with what the land provided. Most of the recipes, however, use ingredients beloved of today's cooks. Here you'll find fricot, a wonder of the Acadian imagination, pot en pot, a traditional Sunday dinner sometimes called grosse soupe, and dozens of meat pies. For those with a sweet tooth, Gallant and Cormier-Boudreau include recipes that use maple syrup and fresh wild berries. A Taste of Acadie is traditional cooking at its best, suffusing contemporary kitchens with country aromas and down-home flavours. Decorated with evocative woodcuts by Michiel Oudemans, it is a pleasure to look at and a charming addition in its own right to contemporary country-style kitchens.
