There are virtually hundreds of life scientists publishing hundreds of papers a year on numerous aspects of the cell cycle. The following are few of the topics covered: cell membrane organization, membrane components, cytoskeleton and associated proteins, cell motility, actin in dividing cells, surface modulating assemblies, microfilaments, microtubules, cleavage furrow, fusion, etc. In all these topics, lifescientists talk about, among others, the forces within the system, the motion within the system and the failure of the system. The concepts of force, motion and failure are, one way or another, all related to the structure of the cell and to the mechanics of the cell activities. When the concepts of mechanics and structure enter the problem then one has to talk about biomechanics; in this case, biomechanics of cytology which we would like to call "Cytbmechanics". However, a review of the journals, books and conference proceedings related to various aspects of cytology reveals that mechanicians have not yet entered the field of cytology at a noticeable level. Some lifescientists have indeed made use of the general principles of mechanics in their works; however, no truly interdisciplinary publication has yet appeared from the collaboration of mechanicians and lifescientists in the field of, for instance, cell division.

The Transformed Cell deals with many of the differences that may exist between transformed cells and their normal counterparts. As stated by its first editor, Dr. D. B. Roodyn, the primary goal of the series Subcellular Biochemistry is to achieve an integrated view of the cell by bringing together results from a wide range of different techniques and disciplines. This volume deals with the applications of fluorescence spectroscopy to membrane research. It seeks to present complementary biochemical and bio physical data on both the structure and the dynamics of biological membranes. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a devastating pathology of the central nervous system (CNS) of unknown etiology which represents the most common neurodegenerative disorder. AD is the major cause of senile dementia, affecting approximately 5% of the population over 70. This syndrome is characterized by loss of short-term memory and progressive impairment of intellectual functions. No established therapeutic strategy has been found so far.Until recently, much of the literature on AD discussed the effects of this syndrome on the CNS. In the last few years, however, a large amount of information has appeared which underscored the importance of studying AD from other perspectives with the view of identifying reliable biological markers. The amyloid precursor proteins (APPs), for instance, constitute a complex family of membrane-bound and soluble glycoproteins that are derived by alternative splicing of a gene on chromosome 21. In the hemopoietic system, APPs have been detected in a number of cell types, such as leukocytes, megakaryocytes and platelets. In addition plasma contains picomolar concentrations of APP isoforms most likely derived from platelets. Abnormalities were also detected in the electrophoretic profile of erythrocytic membranes from AD patients. Numerous abnormalities have been proposed as peripheral markers for AD and several laboratories around the world are deeply involved in this challenging research.This book provides up-to-date information, as review chapters, on non-neuronal cells, with the aim of stimulating the formulation of potential diagnostic-therapeutic strategies.

The motivation for us to conceive this series of volumes on regulation was mainly our belief that it would be fun, and at the same time productive, to approach the subject in a way that differs from that of other treatises. We thought it might be interesting and instructive for both author and reader-to examine a particular area of investigation in a framework of many different problems. Cutting across the traditional boundaries that have separated the subjects in past volumes on regulation is not an easy thing to do-not because it is difficult to think of what interesting topics should replace the old ones, but because it is difficult to find authors who are willing to write about areas outside those pursued in their own laboratories. Anyone who takes on the task of reviewing a broad area of interest must weave together its various parts by picking up the threads from many different laboratories, and attempt to produce a fabric with a meaningful design. Finding persons who are likely to succeed in such a task was the most difficult part of our job. In the first volume of this treatise, most of the chapters dealt with the mechanisms of regulation of gene expression in microorganisms. The second volume involved a somewhat broader area, spanning the prokaryotic-eukaryotic border. Topics ranged from phage morphogenesis to the role of gradients in development. This third volume-Volume 3A concerns hormones, as does the forthcoming companion volume-Volume 3B.

Biological membranes protect cells and organelles from the surrounding environment, but serve also as organising platforms for physiological processes such as cell signalling. The hydrophobic core of membranes is composed of lipids and proteins influencing each other. Local membrane composition and properties define its molecular organisation and, in this way, regulate the function of all associated molecules. Therefore, studying interactions of components, biophysical properties and overall membrane dynamics provides essential information on its function in the context of cell activities. Such knowledge can contribute to biomedical fields such as pharmacology, immunology, neurobiology and many others. The goal of the Research Topic entitled ‘Molecular organisation of membranes: where biology meets biophysics’ was to provide a comprehensive platform for publishing articles, reviews and opinions focused on membrane organisation and the forces behind its heterogeneous and dynamic structure. We collected 11 works which cover topics as diverse as general membrane organisation models, membrane trafficking and signalling regulation, biogenesis of caveolae, protein-lipid interactions and the importance of membrane-associated tetraspanins networks. The prevalent theme was the existence of membrane nanodomains. To this point, new emerging technologies are presented which own the power to bring a novel insight on how membrane nanodomains are formed and maintained and what is their function. We believe that the collection of works in this Research Topic brings forward some important questions which will stimulate further research in this difficult but exciting field.

T and B Lymphocytes: Recognition and Function is the 16th volume of the 1979 ICN-UCLA Symposia on Molecular and Cellular Biology. This book is organized into seven sections, encompassing 74 chapters that summarize molecular level progress in the field of immunobiology. It emphasizes cell membrane, techniques developed for its analysis, and varied products of the major histocompatibility complex, as well as other receptors on cells of the immune system. The book starts by describing two approaches for molecular association evaluation. First is the use of artificial membranes or lipid vesicles for the incorporation of antigens for recognition by T-lymphocytes both at the afferent and efferent levels. Second is the chemical crosslinking of cell surface components with a variety of different crosslinking reagents. This is followed by a discussion on the molecular nature of a T-cell receptor that provides insights of the target(s) recognized by T-lymphocytes. Several chapters discuss data dealing with the issue of the apparent differential recognition by T- and B-cells while both use the same VH genes. Antiidiotypic sera, together with the activity of ""regulator"" T-cells, are also discussed, with regard to their role in networks of regulation of the immune response. This book presents works demonstrating that human T-lymphocytes can also be cloned and both noncytotoxic proliferating T-lymphocytes and Tc can be so obtained. This is along with the continuing studies regarding heterogenity of B-lymphocytes as well as macrophages. Part V focuses on the interaction between lymphocyte and virus and molecular modifications of viral-infected cells. The subsequent section deals with recognition, reactivities, and function of T- and B-lymphocytes. Considerable chapters in this section discuss T-cell cytotoxicity, dichotomy of MHC control over anti H-Y cytotoxic T-cell responses, mouse alloantibodies, and mixed lymphocyte reactions. The concluding part describes immunological tools, such as synthetic membranes and cloned T-cells with biological function.
