This book is a collection of essays devoted in part to new research direc tions in systems, networks, and control theory, and in part to the growing interaction of these disciplines with new sectors of engineering and applied sciences like coding, computer vision, and hybrid systems. These are new areas of rapid growth and of increasing importance in modern technology. The essays, written by world-leading experts in the field, reproduce and expand the plenary and minicoursejminisymposia invited lectures which were delivered at the Mathematical Theory of Networks and Systems Sym posium (MTNS-98), held in Padova, Italy, on July 6-10, 1998. Systems, control, and networks theory has permeated the development of much of present day technology. The impact has been visible in the past fifty years through the dramatic expansion and achievements of the aerospace and avionics industry, through process control and factory au tomation, robotics, communication signals analysis and synthesis, and, more recently, even finance, to name just the most visible applications. The theory has developed from the early phase of its history when the ba sic tools were elementary complex analysis, Laplace transform, and linear differential equations, to present day, where the mathematics ranges widely from functional analysis, PDE's, abstract algebra, stochastic processes and differential geometry. Irrespective of the particular tools, however, the ba sic unifying paradigms of feedback, stability, optimal control, and recursive filtering, have remained the bulk of the field and continue to be the basic motivation for the theory, coming from the real world.

Coding Approaches to Fault Tolerance in Combinational and Dynamic Systems describes coding approaches for designing fault-tolerant systems, i.e., systems that exhibit structured redundancy that enables them to distinguish between correct and incorrect results or between valid and invalid states. Since redundancy is expensive and counter-intuitive to the traditional notion of system design, the book focuses on resource-efficient methodologies that avoid excessive use of redundancy by exploiting the algorithmic/dynamic structure of a particular combinational or dynamic system. The first part of Coding Approaches to Fault Tolerance in Combinational and Dynamic Systems focuses on fault-tolerant combinational systems providing a review of von Neumann's classical work on Probabilistic Logics (including some more recent work on noisy gates) and describing the use of arithmetic coding and algorithm-based fault-tolerant schemes in algebraic settings. The second part of the book focuses on fault tolerance in dynamic systems. Coding Approaches to Fault Tolerance in Combinational and Dynamic Systems also discusses how, in a dynamic system setting, one can relax the traditional assumption that the error-correcting mechanism is fault-free by using distributed error correcting mechanisms. The final chapter presents a methodology for fault diagnosis in discrete event systems that are described by Petri net models; coding techniques are used to quickly detect and identify failures. The AAECC Symposia Series was started in 1983 by Alain Poli (Toulouse), who, together with R. Desq, D. Lazard, and P. Camion, organized the ?rst conference. Originally the acronym AAECC meant “Applied Algebra and Error-Correcting Codes”. Over the years its meaning has shifted to “Applied Algebra, Algebraic Algorithms, and Error-Correcting Codes”, re?ecting the growing importance of complexity in both decoding algorithms and computational algebra. AAECC aims to encourage cross-fertilization between algebraic methods and their applications in computing and communications. The algebraic orientation is towards ?nite ?elds, complexity, polynomials, and graphs. The applications orientation is towards both theoretical and practical error-correction coding, and, since AAECC 13 (Hawaii, 1999), towards cryptography. AAECC was the ?rst symposium with papers connecting Gr ̈obner bases with E-C codes. The balance between theoretical and practical is intended to shift regularly; at AAECC-14 the focus was on the theoretical side.
