From the reviews of the first edition: "... In general the articles ... are well written in a style that enables one to grasp the ideas. The actual style is a readable mix of the important results, outlines of proofs and complete proofs when it does not take too long together with readable explanations of what is going on. Also very useful are the large lists of references which are important not only for their mathematical content but also because the references given also contain articles in the Soviet literature which may not be familiar or possibly accessible to readers." New Zealand Math. Soc. Newsletter 1991 "... Here ... a wealth of material is displayed for us, too much to even indicate in a review. ... Your reviewer was very impressed by the contents of both volumes (EMS 2 and 4), recommending them without any restriction. As far as he could judge, most presentations seem fairly complete..." Introduction to Dynamical Systems and Geometric Mechanics provides a comprehensive tour of two fields that are intimately entwined: dynamical systems is the study of the behavior of physical systems that may be described by a set of nonlinear first-order ordinary differential equations in Euclidean space, whereas geometric mechanics explore similar systems that instead evolve on differentiable manifolds. The first part discusses the linearization and stability of trajectories and fixed points, invariant manifold theory, periodic orbits, Poincaré maps, Floquet theory, the Poincaré-Bendixson theorem, bifurcations, and chaos. The second part of the book begins with a self-contained chapter on differential geometry that introduces notions of manifolds, mappings, vector fields, the Jacobi-Lie bracket, and differential forms.

This volume is devoted to the "hyperbolic theory" of dynamical systems (DS), that is, the theory of smooth DS's with hyperbolic behaviour of the tra jectories (generally speaking, not the individual trajectories, but trajectories filling out more or less "significant" subsets in the phase space. Hyperbolicity the property that under a small displacement of any of a trajectory consists in point of it to one side of the trajectory, the change with time of the relative positions of the original and displaced points resulting from the action of the DS is reminiscent of the mot ion next to a saddle. If there are "sufficiently many" such trajectories and the phase space is compact, then although they "tend to diverge from one another" as it were, they "have nowhere to go" and their behaviour acquires a complicated intricate character. (In the physical literature one often talks about "chaos" in such situations. ) This type of be haviour would appear to be the opposite of the more customary and simple type of behaviour characterized by its own kind of stability and regularity of the motions (these words are for the moment not being used as a strict ter 1 minology but rather as descriptive informal terms). The ergodic properties of DS's with hyperbolic behaviour of trajectories (Bunimovich et al. 1985) have already been considered in Volume 2 of this series. In this volume we therefore consider mainly the properties of a topological character (see below 2 for further details).

A linear integral equation is an equation of the form XEX. (1) 2a(x)cp(x) - Ix k(x, y)cp(y)dv(y) = f(x), Here (X, v) is a measure space with a-finite measure v, 2 is a complex parameter, and a, k, f are given (complex-valued) functions, which are referred to as the coefficient, the kernel, and the free term (or the right-hand side) of equation (1), respectively. The problem consists in determining the parameter 2 and the unknown function cp such that equation (1) is satisfied for almost all x E X (or even for all x E X if, for instance, the integral is understood in the sense of Riemann). In the case f = 0, the equation (1) is called homogeneous, otherwise it is called inhomogeneous. If a and k are matrix functions and, accordingly, cp and f are vector-valued functions, then (1) is referred to as a system of integral equations. Integral equations of the form (1) arise in connection with many boundary value and eigenvalue problems of mathematical physics. Three types of linear integralequations are distinguished: If 2 = 0, then (1) is called an equation of the first kind; if 2a(x) i= 0 for all x E X, then (1) is termed an equation of the second kind; and finally, if a vanishes on some subset of X but 2 i= 0, then (1) is said to be of the third kind.

The problems being solved by invariant theory are far-reaching generalizations and extensions of problems on the "reduction to canonical form" of various is almost the same thing, projective geometry. objects of linear algebra or, what Invariant theory has a ISO-year history, which has seen alternating periods of growth and stagnation, and changes in the formulation of problems, methods of solution, and fields of application. In the last two decades invariant theory has experienced a period of growth, stimulated by a previous development of the theory of algebraic groups and commutative algebra. It is now viewed as a branch of the theory of algebraic transformation groups (and under a broader interpretation can be identified with this theory). We will freely use the theory of algebraic groups, an exposition of which can be found, for example, in the first article of the present volume. We will also assume the reader is familiar with the basic concepts and simplest theorems of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry; when deeper results are needed, we will cite them in the text or provide suitable references.

The goal of these notes is to provide a fast introduction to symplectic geometry for graduate students with some knowledge of differential geometry, de Rham theory and classical Lie groups. This text addresses symplectomorphisms, local forms, contact manifolds, compatible almost complex structures, Kaehler manifolds, hamiltonian mechanics, moment maps, symplectic reduction and symplectic toric manifolds. It contains guided problems, called homework, designed to complement the exposition or extend the reader's understanding. There are by now excellent references on symplectic geometry, a subset of which is in the bibliography of this book. However, the most efficient introduction to a subject is often a short elementary treatment, and these notes attempt to serve that purpose. This text provides a taste of areas of current research and will prepare the reader to explore recent papers and extensive books on symplectic geometry where the pace is much faster. For this reprint numerous corrections and clarifications have been made, and the layout has been improved.
