Il romanzo parte, non casualmente, al condizionale: "Sarebbe la storiadi un dittatore agorafobico" che, volendo andare a vivere tranquillamentein Europa e sfuggire all’orribile destino predettogli da una maga, sceglie unsosia, che a sua volta sceglie un sosia, che a sua volta sceglie un sosia...Inizialmente uguale come una goccia d’acqua al dittatore, a sua volta simile aRodolfo Valentino, lentamente il sosia, per inavvertibili ma costanticambiamenti, diventa simile a Quasimodo, pur mantenendo una leggera somiglianzacon il modello originario. Il popolo di Teresina, però, attribuisce ilcambiamento all’usura della politica. Teresina, già, un piccolo stato dell’AmericaLatina, del Brasile in realtà, anche se è un nome di fantasia.E "Quello che so di Teresina" è la seconda parte del romanzo, unabreccia sul "dietro le quinte", nell’officina del romanzo, ailluminare il punto di partenza della storia, il nucleo generatore di tutta lavicenda. Abbiamo così un’incursione autobiografica, un mosaico di frammenti,paesaggi, volti, storie, lettere, voci di amici scomparsi, fino allarievocazione di un viaggio compiuto da Pennac nell’interno del Brasile seguitoda un atterraggio di emergenza a Teresina e qui, la visione, di notte, in unapiazza circolare deserta e buia, di due uomini appoggiati a una bicicletta,sotto un lampione, che ridono di una luce livida ai loro piedi. Quando Pennac ei suoi amici si avvicinano scoprono che quella luce è un vecchio televisoreaccesso, rozzamente collegato al lampione, e gli uomini stanno vedendo Lacorsa all’oro, di Chaplin. Da questo ricordo, da questa"finestra" parte tutta la storia, tutto il romanzo.La terza parte, "La finestra", narra il destino del primo sosia, ilquale, innamoratosi per caso del cinema, lascia Teresina per diventare un grandeattore. Forse vale la pena di aggiungere che in realtà riuscirà solo adiventare un sosia di Rodolfo Valentino e morirà, solo, in una salacinematografica di Chicago durante la proiezione de Il grande dittatore.Nella penultima parte, "La tentazione dell’Interno", autobiografismoe narrazione si intrecciano sapientemente alle riflessioni sulla nascita deipersonaggi. E a occupare il centro della scena è proprio un personaggio, Sonia,la maschera che trova il corpo senza vita del sosia nel cinema, che, con unpassaggio insolito, passa dallo statuto di personaggio a quello di personareale, e diventa disegnatrice, oggi anziana signora che Pennac e la moglie Minneincontrano a Parigi per saperne di più sul personaggio del sosia. Inframmezzatecosì a riflessioni e ad amabili "fuori tema", seguiamo lechiacchierate, gli incontri dell’autore con il proprio personaggio fattosipersona in carne ossa e ben disposto a fare le pulci al romanzo che la racconta,a rettificare dettagli, a storcere il naso davanti a interpretazioni che noncondivide.Raccontata la proprio storia, Sonia chiede in cambio all’autore la fine dellastoria: che ne è del secondo sosia? Come va a finire la vicenda?Ecco la storia, ovvero ci è stata raccontata una storia, che a sua voltasi basa su storie reali, che a loro volta danno vita a dei racconti, e in unasorta di cerchio magico assistiamo alla fusione delle due dimensioni.
