Echoes of a Prophet examines intertextual connections to Ezekiel found in John and in Second Temple literature. The Dead Sea Scrolls contain many allusions to a number of Ezekiel's oracles, while other Second Temple works refer to only a few of Ezekiel's oracles, and those only rarely. In each case, Manning examines the evidence for the presence of the allusions, studies the implied interpretational methods, and comments on the function of the allusion in advancing the author's ideas. He also analyzes John's allusions to Ezekiel: the good shepherd, the vine, the opened heavens, imagery from the "dry bones" vision, and water symbolism. He observes that John has a few unique tendencies: he alludes to all five of Ezekiel's "oracles of hope" and primarily uses that imagery to describe the giving of the Holy Spirit and new life through Jesus.

Kings, Deliverers, and Prophets brings a new biblical perspective to the much-debated question of the meaning of Luke’s journey narrative. Dennis W. Chadwick identifies and documents three extended sequences of Old Testament echoes in Luke 9–19 by which Luke confirms that Jesus is the eschatological king, the eschatological deliverer, and the eschatological prophet.

In this thousand-year chronicle of a lost tribe of Israel, a king labors with all his heart to serve his people, and prophets of God lead the faithful into battle, defending home and family against hoards of plundering, murderous invaders. Based on the prophesies of Isaiah, this book is both Hebrew and Christian, tying the two traditions together in history. It bears a powerful message with promises from an ancient people. From Jerusalem around 700 BCE, the prophet Isaiah wrote, " If you are willing and obedient you shall eat the good of the land; but if you refuse and rebel you will be devoured by the sword, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it." His words are the moral of this story. The storyline follows the devotion of an ancient people to write the book and leave a testament of their experience. The people saw themselves as part of Isaiah's tapestry of visions. They connected their own lives to events that the prophet foretold, as validation of their extreme journeys and experiences. Isaiah and other Hebrew prophets are quoted throughout the book. A lone survivor placed their record like a seed in the ground sixteen hundred years ago. Now the words of the book speak out of the ground, just as Isaiah foretold, opening the eyes and ears of millions who read it and value it as a sacred book. Echoes From Jerusalem is a complete abridgment of the 190 year-old Book of Mormon. This abridgment is less than 50% of the original book, but covers most of the material and is true to the original wording. Passages are cut and stitched together and have been slightly reordered, making the book more linear, helping the reader complete a cover-to-cover experience, and consider the book as a whole. It is rewritten into paragraph form, and makes new divisions on chapters, to imitate the style of a historical novel. Significant changes are made to the punctuation to help improve sentence and paragraph structure, without changing the words or meaning. All of this is meant to improve reader comprehension.

Sing to the Lord, all the world! Worship the Lord with joy; come before Him with happy songs! Never forget that the Lord is God. He made us and we belong to Him; we are His people, we are His flock. Enter the temple gates with thanksgiving; go into its courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise Him. Teach me your ways, O Lord; make them known to me. Teach me to live according to your truth and righteousness, for you are my God, who saves me. I always trust in you. Even if a whole army surrounds me, I will not be afraid; even if enemies attack me, I will still trust God. The Lord will destroy death forever. He will wipe away the tears from everyone's eyes and take away disgrace we His children have suffered throughout the world. I have a message, a belief, and a story to share with the world. I have put my heart and soul into my endeavor in order to encourage others. I am not a preacher or a prophet, but this is a voice in the desert proclaiming the day of the Lord is at hand, the day of the judgment and salvation. We have been created superior to all other creatures by God, more superior even than angels. Angels were created to serve God, but man was created with a special responsibility to God and a responsibility to all other creatures. We were given the ability to participate in life by creating new life ourselves, something the angels were not. We were not created to worship God but to obey Him, for God has millions of angels to worship Him. If we fail in our responsibility to God by failing to keep His commandments, He will forgive us, but if we fail in our responsibility to one another or to the other creatures in God's creation, what then must we do? We will need to ask them to forgive us, before we turn to God. We must stop judging unjustly; we must no longer be partial to the wicked. We must defend the rights of the poor and the orphans; we must be fair to the needy and the helpless. God is neither desperate nor does He benefit or lose because of our actions. If we do what is good and walk in the right, we bring good unto ourselves. God will be pleased with good actions and bless us. God is interested in having a good relationship with us; this is the true religion-knowing what God wants and knowing that we are doing what pleases Him. It is true that for us, our life is like grass. We grow and flourish like a wildflower; then the wind blows on it, and it is gone-no one sees it again. But for those who honour the Lord, His love lasts forever, and His goodness endures for all generations of those who are true to His covenant and who faithfully obey His commands. The Lord placed His throne in heaven; He is king over all. Praise the Lord, you strong and mighty angels, who obey His commands, who listen to what He says. Praise the Lord, all you heavenly powers, you servants of His, who do His will! Praise the Lord, all His creatures in all the places He rules. Praise the Lord, my soul.

The Old Testament prophetic books play a key role in revealing God's plan of salvation. They occupy a significant portion of the biblical canon, similar in size to the entire New Testament. Yet most believers stay clear of this part of Scripture. They avoid traveling through this forest of oracles and visions. Many preachers also struggle to navigate this unfamiliar territory. Preachers feel much more at ease unpacking the intricate arguments of the Pauline epistles or following the thrilling adventures of biblical narratives rather than exploring the prophetic books. The church, however, needs to hear and respond to the beauty, depth, and relevance of the prophetic message. This book not only provides convincing reasons for preaching the prophets today but also offers concrete guidelines to empower preachers (small group leaders, youth workers, etc.) to communicate the message of the prophets with hermeneutical precision, theological depth, genre sensitivity, and pastoral pulse. This book motivates and equips preachers to travel with confidence through this uncharted territory and to help God's people enjoy the scenery of this part of God's word.

Prophetic symbolism is one of the key topics of this volume. On Isaiah, John F.A. Sawyer finds radical images of Yahweh, Kenneth T. Aitken looks at the metamorphosis of the key motif of hearing, seeing and understanding, Michael L. Barre examines lions and birds in 31.4-5, and Marvin A. Sweeney re-examines vmes(tm)s in 8.6. The imagery of Ezekiel is explored by Leslie C. Allen (the 'Death Valley' vision) and M.G. Swanepoel (Ezekiel 16 and female images of Israel), and Alan Cooper and Athalya Brenner write on the book of Jonah. Two essays of more general scope deal with the search for unity in Isaiah (David Carr) and the redactional shape of Nahum 1 (James Nogalski). An attractive and stimulating volume which reflects the liveliness of current research on the prophetic literature.

The Levitical Day of Atonement was a day of penitence, confession, and judgment for Israelites of loyal character and a day of covenant renewal for the nation of Israel. On this day, sin was removed from the tabernacle through the application of sacrificial blood to its altars and compartments, as well as by the dismissal of the goat for Azazel, which carried all the community’s sin to a “barren land.” As it became ingrained in the veil of Jewish consciousness, the Day of Atonement underwent a “process of abstraction” over many centuries leading up to Second Temple times, when the Most Holy Place lay devoid of the ark of the covenant and its mercy seat. Continuing to reverberate in the Jewish imaginaire, the Day of Atonement was received by the authors of the New Testament, including John of Patmos, to whom its sacrificial typology provided irresistible motifs which they used to proclaim “the Christ event.” By utilizing a coherent intertextual approach, this book explores how John wove the Day of Atonement into the colorful literary tapestry of Revelation.
