El análisis de las relaciones económicas entre la España metropolitana y su principal colonia ultramaria durante el siglo XIX se ha convertido en un objeto de interés creciente para investigadores españoles y cubanos. En este sentido, este libro pretende abarcar los diferentes procesos que marcaron durante el siglo XIX el acontecer histórico cubano en su vertiente socio-económica.De acuerdo con los temas abordados, la obra puede dividirse en tres grandes apartados: el primero tiene como eje central las aportaciones demográficas foráneas que llegan a Cuba para satisfacer la demanda generada por la expansión económica de la isla; por una parte, se analiza la inmigración de carácter forzado fruto del sistema esclavista y, por otra, la inmigración libre que vendrá primero a complementar y después a reemplazar al esclavo como fuerza del trabajo. La fiscalidad colonial y las relaciones comerciales, hispano-cubanas integran el segundo bloque temático, pues ambos aspectos marcharon ineludiblemente unidos a lo largo de todo el siglo XIX. El último bloque temático trata del final de las relaciones coloniales fijado en el 98 como resultado de una crisis que venía gestándose desde hace muchos años antes, así como de las consecuencias que para Cuba supuso su ruptura con España y su conformación como república independiente, tutelada muy de cerca por los Estados Unidos.
