Economic Growth In The Third World written by Lloyd George Reynolds and has been published by New Haven : Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986 with Developing countries categories.

Recent years have seen an increasing body of literature on the economic histories of individual third world countries. This book by eminent scholar Lloyd G. Reynolds is the first to draw together this material and fit it into a systematic framework. Focusing on the forty-one largest countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, Reynolds shows that the third world has a rich historical record of growth and that its growth patterns bear some resemblance to those observed earlier in Europe and North America. Reynolds begins with a definition of economic growth, dividing it into three phases: the era of extensive growth, during which population and national output increase at about the same rate; the turning point, a decade or two that marks the beginning of a sustained rise in per capita output; and the era of intensive growth, marked by a continuing rise in per capita output. In chapters that deal with individual countries, Reynolds dates the turning point, explores the attendant economic and political circumstances, and outlines the key features of intensive growth from that point to the early 1980s.In the rest of the book, Reynolds analyzes such issues as why some countries reached the turning point much earlier than others; what role was played by political leadership, by opportunities for foreign trade, and by colonial rule or its absence; why certain countries grew faster than others; and what government can do to promote economic growth.

This book is a study of Third World economic development and the factors which have made development so elusive. It discusses the policy reform necessary to spur development as well as the relationship between development theory and policy. The author argues that the key to successful development policy is through reduced state intervention, and that to the extent state intervention is necessary, it should be through rather than against the market mechanism.

Until the early to mid-1970s, social scientists in the fields of population and development were largely going their own ways. Demographers relied almost exclusively on demographic transition theory as their para digm for understanding the role of development in population change and fertility decline. Conversely, most development economists and other specialists were certainly aware of the constraints placed upon development objectives by population growth. However, the main de velopment theories paid little attention to population and the implica tions of population growth for development. Indeed it was not until after the World Population Conference in Bucharest in 1974 that the interaction of population and development became a serious and pur posive theme for social scientific study. Accordingly, since about the mid-1970s, an extensive literature in the field of population and develop ment has been generated. And in 1975, under the auspices of The Popu lation Council, the journal Population and Development Review was found ed, a journal which in the past decade has developed into the premier publication in the world for work in this area. But our understanding of development as it refers to change in Third World countries remained fragmented. Moreover, our understanding of the linkages and interac tions between population and development was very limited. It is in this regard that Ozzie Simmons's Perspectives on Development and Population Growth in the Third World will certainly have an impact.

The Economic Development Of The Third World Since 1900 written by Paul Bairoch and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-05 with Business & Economics categories.

First published in 1967, Professor Bairoch’s Diagnostic de L’Evolution Economique du Tiers-Monde has gone into four editions, and has brought the author an international reputation. This English translation is, in effect, another edition based on the latest French text but incorporating much which is not to be found there. The statistical tables have been revised and expanded wherever possible to include figures up to the end of 1972; the bibliography has been specially adapted to include the literature on the subject in the English language; and two new chapters have been written: Chapter 8 on ‘Urbanization’ and Chapter 9 on ‘The labour force and employment’. It has been Professor Bairoch’s aim in this book to examine the development of under-developed countries (including China) during the present century and through the use of comparative statistics to formulate a diagnosis of their growth. His analysis includes, whenever relevant, a comparison between the present economic progress of Third World countries and that of the developed countries at the time of their ‘take off’. Special attention has also been given to China’s unique path of development. In the course of his research the author has elaborated several new series. The production of these new series and their integration with existing data make this book a valuable quantitative economic history of the Third World.
