This book provides a robust theoretical and empirical exploration of the interrelationship between economic neoliberalism and international development. Putting the experiences of developing and transitional economies centre stage, the book investigates how their economic policies compare with the nature of economic liberalism during and after the significant economic reforms which took place from the mid-1980s. Beginning with two chapters which provide an introduction to the concept of economic neoliberalism, the second section focuses on its application to ‘practice’, and the book moves on to country/regional case studies, taken from Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America, China, and Eastern Europe. From time to time certain models dominated the theoretical and practical agenda. These models of development had - and still have - their own advantages and disadvantages, advocates and opponents, strengths and weaknesses. Neo-liberalism is one of the models that was studied most deeply in terms of its positive and negative impacts on development generally and on the state role specifically. Since the 1970s neoliberal approach was widely applied in different countries around the world, including developing and developed countries with the assistance of the International Financial Institutions (IFI) that evidently advocate for neoliberalism in developing countries. Therefore, strong debates on the efficiency and validity of this approach were developed (Greig et al., 2007). This paper will discuss neoliberalism as one of the development models. It attempts to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the neoliberal approach to development. It will start by reviewing the emergence and evolution of neoliberalism. Then, some of the strengths and weaknesses of neoliberalism will be presented. Chilean and Egyptian case studies will be briefly highlighted in order to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of neoliberalism. Finally, the conclusion will be presented.

The Political Economy of Resources and Development offers a unique and multidisciplinary perspective on how the commodity boom of the mid-2000s reshaped the model of development throughout Latin America and elsewhere in the developing world. Governments increased taxes and royalties on the resource sector, the nationalization of foreign firms returned to the mainstream economic policy agenda, and public spending on social and developmental goals surged. These trends, often described as resource nationalism, have developed into a strategy for economic development, generated a re-imagining of the state and its institutional possibilities, and created a new but very significant political risk for extractive enterprises. However, these innovations, which constitute the most dramatic change in development policy in Latin America since the advent of neoliberalism, have so far received little attention from either academic or policy-oriented publications. This book explores the reasons behind these policies, and their effects on states, firms, and development trajectories. This text brings together renowned thematic experts to examine the political-economic causes of resource nationalism, as well as its manifestation in six Latin American countries. The causal variables considered by the contributors to this collection include a range of political-economic determinants of policy including commodity prices; the influence of ideology and national politics; ideas about industrial policy; relations between host governments and investors; and how countries respond to opportunities provided by regional initiatives and the new geography of the global economy.
