Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 9: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II., January to June, 1864 As the licensing bodies will be expected to express an Opinion on this subject before the next meeting of Council, I venture to hope that some observations with regard to the points in question will not now be considered out of place; and. I further trust that the circumstance of having been constantly engaged in teaching anatomy or surgery during the long period of forty years, together with the nature of my clinical duties, which, by establishing an intimate relation with students, has enabled me to become well acquainted with their feelings and difficulties, will be accepted as a sufficient apology for my present attempt. Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 31: Comprising the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II., January to June 1886 In no city in the world has the system of notification had a fairer trial or been more successful. The first result of the system was to open the eyes of the citizens and the profession to the enormous amount of preventi ble disease that lay simmering in our midst, the existence of which was only too tardily and partially revealed by the mortality returns; and, second, to couvrues our Town Council of the utter insufficiency of the accommodation pro vided in Edinburgh for the isolation and treatment of infectious disease. This led to instant action on the part of the authorities; and at an expense of fully Edinburgh is now provided with a satisfactory infectious hospital, which will be available as an important adjunct to our Medical School, by affording our students and young practitioners an opportunity of studying, under favourable circumstances, those important diseases, - the treatment of which constitutes, as we all know, such a large part of ordinary medical practice. Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 24: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II.; January to June 1879 The next S eaker is a young man who has rapidly risen to the very front ran till already be occupies perhaps the most coveted of the obstetrical chairs in Germany. He has the rounded face, the fair hair and complexion, and sanguine temperament Of a typical North German. It is Professor Schroder of Berlin, who relates the result of three cases, in two Of which the Operation had been entirely successful. The Operation had in each case been carried out with Freund's instruments, and almost strictly according to Freund's directions. Professor Muller of Berne relates a successful case of extirpation for carcinoma of the corpus uteri, and thinks it well to leave the cervix in cases where it was not implicated in the disease. Another speaker, young, but portly, with a considerable amount of self-assurance, states that he also has succeeded in extirpating the uterus in three different individuals Without employing Freund's instruments or attending to Freund's instructions. The section, however, manifest anything but sympathy with the views of this gentleman, Dr Carl Martin, the rather, perhaps, that all his three cases ended - and ended soon - fatally. Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 11: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II-January to June 1866 It was particularly striking last winter to see the manner in which typhus spread in the poorest district of Bristol. It seldom did so from one house to the next, unless the neighbours were on intimate terms, or unless they had a common privy. The houses in a court with a common privy were affected quickly, one after another; but where each house had its own convenience of this kind, the disease Spread, not next door, but to houses from whence relatives of the sick people had come to visit them, or whither, as occurred in some cases, they had removed the clothes or bedding of their relatives who had died of fever. This district was then the worst drained portion of the city, the most dirty, the most overcrowded, and the inhabitants were the very poorest of the population, were ill-fed, and many were intemperate. Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 15: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II. January to June, 1870 Botany and Zoology are appropriately placed by the Royal Col leges among the subjects for preliminary examination; but instead of being optional, their study should, in my Opinion, be rendered im perative. It is really important that a medical man should not dis play ignorance when questioned as to points of natural history, such as, for example, was exhibited by a distinguished individual, whom I shall not name, some years ago, who, being interrogated as to his knowledge of fishes, announced that he was familiar with them all from the limpet to the whale, omitting to notice that neither of the extremes he indicated belonged to the class of which he spoke. A knowledge of N atural Philosophy, too, is of very great im ort ance in many ways, but espemally in enabling us to ta e a wide and correct view of the circumstances that influence the health of the individual and the community, and of the means whereby an improved sanitary condition may be established. Apart from its own inherent interest, this science is so closely re lated to Physiology, to Pathology, and to Hygiene, that no medical man of the present day can afford to be ignorant of it. For ex ample, if I may be allowed to select an illustration from my own department, how essential is a knowledge of Optics for a satisfac tory acquaintance with the physiology, pathology, and treatment of diseases of the eye. And, on the other hand, do we not observe that the science of Optics is every da contributing more to our know ledge of disease of internal organs Since the ophthalmoscope, by which we can inspect the interior of the eye, was invented, and that is not many years ago, we have got laryngoscopes and rhinoscopes, as well as endoscopes, in which ingenious optical arrangements eu able us directly to inspect several deep-seated structures. Or again, to turn to electrical phenomena, how much light have the investiga tions of Du bois-reymond thrown upon the electrical conditions of muscles and nerves, and of Duchenne of Boulogne upon the changes in these relationshi s in disease, and the benefit which may be de rived from the employment of electricity as a therapeutic agent. Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 30: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II, January to June, 1885 To Herophilus, who comes forty years later, is due the credit of having founded Human Anatomy. He is stated to have dissected human bodies extensively; but his works having been lost, all that is known of his anatomical researches is gathered from the writings of others. To the parts which still retain them, he gave the names of calamus. Scriptorius, and duodenum, and his memory is perpetuated in the mind of every medical student in the Torcular Herophili. A contemporary of his named Erasistratus made some valuable discoveries in the poietic and nervous systems.
