There are demands for research activity in the biomedical sciences and the process of planning, funding, permissions, data acquisition, analysis, and writing of the research article often seems problematic for the new and often even for the experienced researcher. Many may also wonder what actually happens after the paper is submitted, how their work is handled through the editorial process, and what may influence the decision for acceptance or rejection. Thus, there are numerous issues in the many phases from idea to publication. The purpose of this book series is to guide you through the different steps of the research journey all the way from the initial idea and until you see your final paper in print. About the author: In my professional life I am professor and chief surgeon at Herlev Hospital, a large public hospital attached to the University of Copenhagen. I was assistant editor for 6 years and thereafter editor-in-chief for 7 years of the Journal of the Danish Medical Association (www.ugeskriftet.dk) and the Danish Medical Journal (www.danmedj.dk). These are signature journals of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (www.icmje.org), and by that I served on the ICMJE for the 7 seven years as a chief editor. About this book: In the present book I will go through the steps in the editorial proces and discuss various issues from editor's point of view. It includes important tips and tricks that will help you get your paper published.

This book eases the task of converting research work into a manuscript, and covers the recent developments in publishing that often stump budding researchers. Few researchers in the biomedical sciences are trained in the essential skills of reporting their results, and they seek help in writing a paper that will be acceptable for publication in the ‘right’ journal, and in presenting their results ‘effectively’ at a meeting. As well as covering the basic aspects of preparing manuscripts for publication, the book discusses best practices and issues relating to the publication of biomedical research, including topics such as peer-review, authorship, plagiarism, conflicts of interest, publication misconduct, electronic publishing and open-access journals. With more than two decades of experience in conducting workshops on writing scientific papers, the editors have brought together the expertise of 29 authors from seven countries to produce this one-stop guide to publishing research in biomedical sciences. This book is intended for young researchers who are beginning their careers and wish to hone their skills and understand the rigors of research writing and publishing.

Preface The purpose of writing this book is to clarify the proper approach to the discussion and study of research integrity and publication ethics in medical research; this will include a code of ethics for academics, as well as cover plagiarism and intellectual property rights. At present, there is a lack of robust agreement on the degree of empirical scientific evidence for specific problems that frequently undermine integrity in research, leading to research misconduct. There is also scant knowledge about publication ethics, for which publication of a definitive code is required. In addition, many instances of what may appear to be fabricated evidence or falsified data have arisen due to a lack of knowledge about best practice rather than intentional fraud. A valuable resource is needed to support and define collaboration between research scholars in this field, and to recognize the boundaries and principles involved. This book seeks to establish a firm knowledge base to address issues arising from research integrity, publication ethics, plagiarism, and protection of intellectual property. It wishes to act as an important guideline for research students for which, at present, there is a notable absence. Key individuals who will benefit the most from this book are qualified professionals involved in the field of medical research; that is, clinical researchers, research students, and scientists. The general public, who need to place complete trust in research integrity, may also be interested in further understanding a topic that is all too infrequently discussed and rarely in the public domain. Scientists are expected to occupy the high moral ground when it comes to the search for truth, especially in regard to the human body. Cases of misconduct tend to hit the headlines due to this very fact, which is why it is imperative that the target audience is as wide as possible to effect transparency on the subject. The features and contents of this book will impart a greater depth of understanding about integrity and publication ethical issues to medical research scientists prior to conducting their research, and to journal editors throughout the publication process. It will explain and define the subject with clear parameters, incorporating a code of ethics. The present book challenges the current climate of ignorance about research integrity and ethics. It will help avoid instances of misconduct, and ensuing investigations, which often arise due to ignorance. It will save time, money, and the psychological effects of accusation, reprimand, and subsequent punitive action by avoidance of wrongdoing. If a medical researcher has been found to have fabricated the results of their studies, the book will act as a valuable guideline for proposed action; the target audience will gain from a clearer definition of research integrity. It will obviate the tendency of some research scientists, even those highly experienced, to base their findings on personal experience, philosophical bias, political and media responses, and individual case studies. A valuable feature of the book will be helping research scientists to advance to the next level of understanding in the study and discussion of research integrity and publication ethics. A number of the interpretations in this book are based on special guidelines co-authored by W Jerjes and C Hopper as well as a number of au13 thors. Also, we acknowledge the support of English language specialist Sandy Eifion-Jones in improving the standard of English for the initial draft of this book. The authors

False data published by a psychologist influence policies for treating the mentally retarded. A Nobel Prize-winning molecular biologist resigns the presidency of Rockefeller University in the wake of a scandal involving a co-author accused of fabricating data. A university investigating committee declares that almost half the published articles of a promising young radiologist are fraudulent. Incidents like these strike at the heart of the scientific enterprise and shake the confidence of a society accustomed to thinking of scientists as selfless seekers of truth. Marcel LaFollette's long-awaited book gives a penetrating examination of the world of scientific publishing in which such incidents of misconduct take place. Because influential scientific journals have been involved in the controversies, LaFollette focuses on the fragile "peer review" process—the editorial system of seeking pre-publication opinions from experts. She addresses the cultural glorification of science, which, combined with a scientist's thirst for achievement, can seem to make cheating worth the danger. She describes the great risks taken by the accusers—often scholars of less prestige and power than the accused—whom she calls "nemesis figures" for their relentless dedication to uncovering dishonesty. In sober warning, LaFollette notes that impatient calls from Congress, journalists, and taxpayers for greater accountability from scientists have important implications for the entire system of scientific research and communication. Provocative and learned, Stealing Into Print is certain to become the authoritative work on scientific fraud, invaluable to the scientific community, policy makers, and the general public.
