En Colombia la Constitución, los discursos públicos y en general las instituciones dan la impresión de que tenemos una sociedad mucho más abierta, móvil y maleable de lo que realmente existe. Basta con mirar las genealogías de la sociedad colombiana para ver la facilidad con la cual el estatus social de las familias se reproduce de padres a hijos desde tiempos inmemoriales. El sistema educativo podría ser un mecanismo de atenuación de esas desigualdades. Pero no lo es. El sistema educativo no sólo educa mejor a las clases altas, sino que las educa por separado. Los ricos no sólo reciben una educación de mejor calidad sino también una educación exclusiva. En Colombia cada clase social se educa, en términos generales, por aparte. La oferta de la educación pública es deficiente, y la clase alta busca, a través de la educación privada, mejores estándares educativos que puede pagar para que ello sea posible. En este libro se muestra, a través de una investigación empírica basada en el análisis de los resultados del examen de Estado, cómo la educación básica en Colombia se parece a un sistema de segregación, un sistema de separados y desiguales, que viola el derecho a la no discriminación y la igualdad de oportunidades consagrada en la Constitución.

La educación en Colombia está fuertemente sesgada por la clase social. En términos generales, los hijos de los padres de clase alta estudian en colegios que ofrecen una educación de buena calidad, mientras que los hijos de padres de clase baja y media baja estudian en colegios que ofrecen una educación de menor calidad y en algunos casos, sobre todo cuando se trata de campesinos, de una calidad deficiente. Hay excepciones claro, y también algunos intentos de política pública que procuran remediar esta situación; pero en términos globales esta separación existe y equivale a una situación de segregación que aquí denominamos apartheid educativo. En este libro se estudia esta segregación no solo en lo que se relaciona con su descripción actual sino también con su origen histórico. En relación con esto último, se analizan las tensiones políticas y religiosas que, a lo largo de la historia de Colombia, impidieron el buen desarrollo de la educación pública. Fueron tensiones que, en medio de debates muy abstractos e ideologizados, caldearon los ánimos de las partes involucradas, todo lo cual frustró los acuerdos básicos que se requerían para hacer avanzar los proyectos educativos. En relación con la descripción fáctica, el libro presenta las cifras y los análisis cuantitativos que muestras cómo, desde la primera infancia y hasta la educación universitaria, se consolida un sistema de segregación en el que los estudiantes reciben un tipo de educación de calidad diferente según la clase social a la que pertenecen. La clase política colombiana y la sociedad misma han terminado normalizando esta anomalía, e incluso viendo en ello una fatalidad histórica frente a la cual nada se puede hacer. En este libro, por el contrario, se defiende la necesidad de emprender un gran proyecto educativo que remede los efectos nefastos, para el desarrollo y la democracia, del sistema de segregación que hoy tenemos.

This volume is a forward–looking intersection of Sociological perspectives on mathematics classrooms and socio-political perspectives on mathematics education. The first perspective has generated a substantial body of knowledge in the mathematics education. Interactionist research has deepened our understanding of interaction processes, socio-mathematical norms and the negotiation of meaning, generating a ‘micro-sociology’ or a ‘micro-ethnography’ of the mathematics classroom. More recently, socio-political perspectives on mathematics education interrelate educational practices in mathematics with macro-social issues of social equity, class, and race and with the policies that regulate institutionalized mathematics education. This book documents, strings together and juxtaposes research that uses ethnographical classroom data to explain, on the one hand, how socio-political issues play out in the mathematics class.
