This unique volume utilizes the UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) framework to illustrate successful integration of sustainability education in post-secondary foreign language (FL) learning. Showcasing a variety of approaches to using content-based instruction (CBI) in college-level courses, this text valuably demonstrates how topics relating to environmental, social, and cultural dimensions of sustainability can be integrated in FL curricula. Chapters draw on case studies from colleges throughout the US and consider theoretical and practical concerns relating to models of sustainability-based teaching and learning. Chapters present examples of project-, problem-, and task-based approaches, as well as field work, debate, and reflective pedagogies to enhance students’ awareness and engagement with sustainable development issues as they acquire a foreign language. Insights and recommendations apply across languages and highlight the potential contribution of FL learning to promote sustainability literacy amongst learners. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators in higher education with an interest in Modern Foreign Languages, sustainability education, training, and leadership more broadly.

As we confront the daunting challenges of the 21st century—climate change, social inequality, resource depletion, and the loss of biodiversity—the role of education has emerged as a pivotal force in driving transformative change. "Education for Sustainable Development: The Contribution of Universities" is a response to this urgent call for a reimagined educational landscape, one that empowers current and future generations to navigate and address the complexities of sustainability. This book seeks to outline universities' critical role as catalysts for sustainable development. As centres of knowledge creation, innovation, and community engagement, universities possess the unique ability to influence not only individual lives but also societal norms and practices. They are uniquely positioned to integrate sustainability into their curricula, research agendas, and outreach efforts, thus fostering a culture of sustainability that permeates all aspects of academic life. The need for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has never been clearer. By emphasising sustainability in higher education, we can raise awareness among students and faculty, inspiring them to become informed and engaged global citizens. This book serves as a comprehensive resource, offering insights, best practices, and real-world examples of how universities around the globe are advancing the principles of ESD. Within this book, the readers will find a rich tapestry of ideas and strategies designed to encourage institutions to embrace sustainability in a holistic manner. In an era of rapid societal change and political and ecological global crises, universities play a vital role in educating future teachers for sustainable development and global citizenship. As teacher educators at universities, solving these complex issues is beyond our scope. Nevertheless, our volume addresses the pivotal role of teacher education in fostering inclusive, sustainable, and peaceful societies. How can universities empower future teachers to navigate these complexities and cultivate the competencies needed for sustainable development and global citizenship? How can they guide learners towards becoming responsible citizens of the world? Our volume explores these questions, presenting concepts and pedagogical approaches developed within the international project UP Network for Sustainable Teacher Education (2021-2024), coordinated by the University of Potsdam and sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Laying the theoretical foundation by providing a framework that emphasizes the transformative potential of Education for Sustainable Development and the importance of action-oriented pedagogy, the volume offers insights from the interdisciplinary, international Summer School Teaching the SDGs held in 2022. The Summer School concept provides a practical example of how Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship can be integrated into teacher education programs through practical experiences and subject-specific viewpoints. Recognizing the global nature of the challenges associated with sustainable development and our shared responsibility to address them, this volume concludes by presenting various successful strategies and models from the University of Potsdam. By sharing our collaborative projects in this volume, we aim to offer insights into our activities, contribute to the academic discourse on Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship in teacher education, and inspire collaboration across diverse contexts. We invite teacher educators from all fields to join us in sharing context-specific concepts and approaches, fostering the development of global competencies for a sustainable future.

A Transdisciplinary Approach to Chinese and Japanese Language Teaching illustrates how the transdisciplinary approach to second language acquisition (SLA) centers around collaboration to provide a learning-conducive environment with rich semiotic resources for second/foreign language learners. The volume consists of 14 chapters from leading experts in SLA and Chinese and Japanese language educators from Canada, China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. As a first work of its kind, the contributions feature both theoretical interpretations of transdisciplinary concepts that can apply to Chinese/Japanese as a second language learning and case studies showcasing how college-level Chinese and Japanese language educators design and implement pedagogical projects in collaboration with partners across languages, disciplines, communities, and borders by adopting a transdisciplinary perspective to analyze students’ learning outcomes. This book will benefit researchers, administrators, educators, and teacher educators in higher education with an interest in world language education and interdisciplinary and project-based teaching.

Taboos And Controversial Issues In Foreign Language Education written by Christian Ludwig and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-24 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This edited volume provides innovative insights into how critical language pedagogy and taboo topics can inform and transform the teaching and learning of foreign languages. The book investigates the potential as well as the challenges involved in dealing with taboo topics in the foreign language classroom. Traditionally subsumed under the acronym PARSNIP (politics, alcohol, religion, narcotics, isms, and pork). By examining how additional controversial topics such as disability, racism, conspiracy theories and taboo language can be integrated into conceptual teaching frameworks and teaching practice, this edited volume draws on examples from literary texts and pop culture such as young adult novels, music videos, or rap songs and investigates their potential for developing critical literacies. The book considers foreign language teaching outside of English teaching contexts and sets the groundwork for addressing the integration of taboo topics in foreign language education theory, research, and practice. Filling an important gap in educational research, the book will be of great interest to researchers, academics, and students of foreign language education, critical pedagogy, and applied linguistics. It will also be useful reading for teacher trainers and educators of foreign language education. Chapter 1 of this book is available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.taylorfrancis.com.
