Excerpt from Education Through Play When the author began this work, it was with the intention of treating the entire subject in a single volume, but as the book began to take shape, it became evident that the material in hand was too manifold to be treated satisfactorily in a book of the size that would be appreciated by the reading public. Excerpt from Recreation the Basis of Association Between Parents and Teachers Public money pays for our costly, hand some, well equipped school buildings. To get the best results from this investment they must be kept open longer than seven hours a day. In many cities the day instruction is now sup plemented by other activities which yield large dividends in social and civic service. The community owns the schoolhouse. It is the natural neighborhood center, day and evening, the year round. It can be used effec tively for a surprising number and variety of gatherings. It can serve the whole neighbor hood and bring back to the taxpayers who paid for it a rich return in recreation, education and good citizenship. Excerpt from Character Through Recreation This book is issued by the American Sunday-School Union under the John C. Green Income Fund. It won the first prize offered for the best manuscript on the subject of Amusements: How Can They Be Made to Promote the Highest Well-Being of Society? The provisions of the fund authorize the Union to choose the subject, - which must always be germane to the object of the Society, - and by owning the copyright, to reduce the price of the book. In this way, works of a high order of merit may be put into circulation at a reasonable price. The author is given large liberty in the literary form, style and treatment of the subject. This book treats a theme of universal interest to church and Sunday-school workers, parents and teachers. It will be specially valued by those who, in constantly increasing numbers, are devoting themselves to developing the play life of the nation. The author brings to his task a wide acquaintance with what is being written on the subject in current book and periodical literature, together with extensive personal observation of the effect of amusements, especially upon the life of young people. While clearly pointing out the dangers and evils connected with modern amusements, his book is not destructive but constructive. Its aim, as its title suggests, is to show how the play life of the nation may be made an important factor in promoting moral as well as physical health. Excerpt from Recreation for Teachers or the Teacher's Leisure Time AT this moment Of history, when we have cast all our hopes and ideals into the great conflict on which hangs the fate Of Democracy, when we are bending every effort to win the war and it seems to us that nothing much matters except to win the war, it may appear almost disloyal to Offer to the teachers of the country a book on recreation. Surely this is a time for work and not for play. This must be the first thought of many. But Shall we not say rather that this is a time for efficiency? If play will help us to win the war, let us have it, and the fact is that play will help us to win the war. Excerpt from Play and Recreation, for the Open Country I was led to undertake the preparation of this book by a suggestion that came to me from Dr. A. E. Winship of the New England Journal of Education while I was lecturing and conducting some play demonstrations at the normal school at Kearney, Nebraska. The suggestions here made have since been tried at many normal schools and rural teachers' institutes. I am much indebted to the following associations and persons for their kindness in loaning pictures for the book: The Playground and Recreation Association of America; the Boy Scouts of America; the Camp Fire Girls; Mr. O. H. Benson of the United States Department of Agriculture; The Agricultural College, Stillwater, Oklahoma; Miss Nina B. Lamkin; Young Women's Christian Association, St. Louis, Missouri; Mr. W. Francis Hyde, Worcester, Massachusetts; Reverend Frederick Hollister, North Stonington, Connecticut; Mr. John Staples, Houston, Texas; and President John Kirk of the Normal School, Kirksville, Missouri. Recreation And The Church Classic Reprint written by Herbert Wright Gates and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-26 with Education categories.

Excerpt from Recreation and the Church There is no more potent influence or favorable approach to the inner life of childhood and youth than is found in recreational interests and activities. Play, games, athletic sports, are not merely ad junots to a religious educational program, baits to interest, or preventives of less desirable occupations. They are the open door to the real boy, the real girl, and they furnish the best of opportunities for direct as well as indirect moral and religious training. The church that fails to take account of, and to use to the best advantage, these means of reaching the children and youth misses an important part Of its opportunity. It is with the hope of aiding those who desire to increase their effectiveness in this field that this book has been written. The attempt has been made to present only such principles as have stood the test of experience and ideals that have been more or less fully realized in practical work. The author wishes to acknowledge his indebted ness to the many who have aided him with informa tion and suggestions. The chapter on Some Typical Church Programs would have been im possible without the letters from those mentioned therein, giving the results of their own experience. Special acknowledgment is due to Rev. J. W. F. Davies, of Community House, Winnetka, Illinois. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Education by Plays and Games The study of which this book is a revision was begun at Clark University and published in the Pedagogical Seminary in 1894. Since then the writer has been in very intimate and almost constant touch with children. His interest in child play, awakened years ago and kept active by observation and personal contact with children in clubs, play schools, school playgrounds, and the home circle, has been encouraged by numberless requests from teachers for the little study pub lished ten years ago. Largely in response to these requests this revision has been undertaken. It is earnestly hoped that the book may help promote a wider and higher appreciation of play and of its value in education, and add somewhat to the sum of child happiness in the world. The discussion of the meaning of play, of the relation of play and work, and of the history and application of play to education is by no means full. It can scarcely do more than give the point of view. The discussion of the periods of childhood is a bare summary, but is sufficient, it is hoped, to make clear their relation to the Course of Plays and Games. Of the course itself it may be admitted that it is perhaps too condensed. The whole study is valuable, if at all, mainly for its suggestiveness.
