Excerpt from Educational Handwork Each course outlined 1s merely a suggestive one, but it is hoped that thoughtful teachers may find sufficient within the limits of this volume to enable them to introduce some or all of the several branches of the subject as herein considered. If a beginning be made, the ingenuity and inventive skill alike of teachers and pupils will enable each branch to he. Carried far beyond the exercises given in these pages. This is especially true of the design and pattern work, the scope for originality of thought and execution being practically unlimited in this interesting and attractive form of hand-and-eye Training. The author is greatly indebted to Mrs. S. B. Patterson, of the Kinder garten Training School at Truro, n.s., for many valuable suggestions and practical help in the revision of the chapters on the Primary work. The advanced portion is chiefly the result 'of the author's experience as a teacher and organizer of Manual Training in the schools of England and Canada. Excerpt from Handwork and Its Place in Early Education Experience has taught that restless and inquiring pupils need a variety Of forms of employment, hence an attempt has been made to indicate as many as possible of the simple arts and crafts open to them. Special emphasis is laid on the Gifts and Occupa tions of Froebel and on Dr. Dewey's experiments, because a thoughtful study of the work of these reformers cannot fail to be helpful and stimulating to any open-minded student. The introductory chapter is Obviously sketchy and incomplete, but it may help the student to begin to understand something Of the child's fundamental needs and then send her on to_ books which deal adequately with the subject. Excerpt from Purposeful Handwork IT is my hope that this little manual will be re garded by the lay teacher as a compilation of sug gestions, and not as an extensive study, or final treatise on handwork. As society evolves, education must change to keep apace with it, so may this text serve as a waypost, not a goal. It was not my intention, originally, to write a book; the need developed and I met it as I could. The content of these few pages is the result of eight years of work, including experimental kinder garten and first grade teaching, physical education supervision in the elementary school, and Normal Training School instructing. I do not claim it to be original. It is a compila tion of suggestions and ideas which have come to me from my own little daughter, from the children whom it has been my good fortune to teach in public schools, from Normal School students, from observation of daily life, and from individual study. The projects described have been worked out in an average one-teacher, one-room public school kindergarten or first grade of mixed population. Excerpt from Handwork as an Educational Medium The doctor's patients have a much stronger belief in the efficacy of drugs than the doctor himself, and the average parent has profounder confidence in the educative value of books than the teacher himself. And, as the 'modern physician tends more and more to recognize that it is Nature that cures, so does the modern educator tend more and more to recognize that it is Nature that teaches, that learning is a spontaneous process which no lack of schooling can stop, and no extent of schooling can do more than modify. The study of this process provides the soundest basis for a theory Of edu cation, and of this process muscular activities are inseverably a part. Excerpt from First Years in Handicraft AT the present time the United States leads the world in the excellence of its system of public education. Among its prominent features is the training in handwork, begun in the kindergarten and continued throughout the common-school years, whence it passes without break into the manual training high schools and special technical institutions. Of the several periods marking this manual training course the weakest is found in the primary school, dealing with pupils of from seven to eleven or twelve years of age. These children have outgrown the employment of the kindergarten and receiving class, but have yet to attain the growth qualify ing them for the forms of handicraft common in the grammar grades. With a view to partially bridging this hiatus with the help of my many years of intimate acquaintance with children, I have devised these exercises. Excerpt from Suggestions for Hand Work in School and Home If the child is given freedom of choice only from a well-selected and carefully prepared col lection of songs and musical compositions, why should the kindergartner not place before him also only beautiful forms and artistic colors from which he may make selections for the car rying out of his hand work? Why give greater thought and attention to the training of the ear than to the training of the eye? Why allow the culture epoch theory to influence us more in training the sense of hearing than in training the sense of sight? Why make the kinder gartner of value in helping to hasten the growth of the child along one line of development and yet allow her to remain almost valueless along another? Bookbinding As A Handwork Subject written by J. Halliday and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-04 with Crafts & Hobbies categories.

Excerpt from Bookbinding as a Handwork Subject: Being a Full Explanation of How Books Can Be Bound With Simple Apparatus in a School Classroom As a firm believer in the educative power of handicraft, it is a true pleasure to find that Mr. Halliday has, in his Handbook of Bookbinding, supplied what, so far as I know, has been a real want. He has not only written clearly and concisely, but he has admirably illustrated the instruction he gives. He has gone carefully into the prices of tools and materials, and has shown that the work of bookbinding can be graded for the various standards of children which may take up the occupation under their school-teacher's supervision. It is a great matter that nearly all the apparatus can be made by the pupils themselves, and the interest of the processes is ensured by the appeal which the work makes not to one sense only but to many senses. It appeals to craft of hand. It appeals to the delight of the eye, and not least to the creative sense that is astonished at the result and the usefulness of its labour. Last, but not least, the art of bookbinding is one that can be learned and practised by girls as well as by boys, and it will be found that, having once learned the rudiments, it is a pleasant fireside occupation for long evenings at home, which will materially add to the neatness and good order of the household, and save much expense at the same time. The child who has gone through this course will make its own Christmas cards, its own note-books, its own volumes of stories, and its own bindings for papers and magazines. I heartily commend this little volume of practical help to teachers and scholars alike. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
