Excerpt from Handwork as an Educational Medium The doctor's patients have a much stronger belief in the efficacy of drugs than the doctor himself, and the average parent has profounder confidence in the educative value of books than the teacher himself. And, as the 'modern physician tends more and more to recognize that it is Nature that cures, so does the modern educator tend more and more to recognize that it is Nature that teaches, that learning is a spontaneous process which no lack of schooling can stop, and no extent of schooling can do more than modify. The study of this process provides the soundest basis for a theory Of edu cation, and of this process muscular activities are inseverably a part. Excerpt from Educational Handwork Each course outlined 1s merely a suggestive one, but it is hoped that thoughtful teachers may find sufficient within the limits of this volume to enable them to introduce some or all of the several branches of the subject as herein considered. If a beginning be made, the ingenuity and inventive skill alike of teachers and pupils will enable each branch to he. Carried far beyond the exercises given in these pages. This is especially true of the design and pattern work, the scope for originality of thought and execution being practically unlimited in this interesting and attractive form of hand-and-eye Training. The author is greatly indebted to Mrs. S. B. Patterson, of the Kinder garten Training School at Truro, n.s., for many valuable suggestions and practical help in the revision of the chapters on the Primary work. The advanced portion is chiefly the result 'of the author's experience as a teacher and organizer of Manual Training in the schools of England and Canada. Excerpt from Purposeful Handwork IT is my hope that this little manual will be re garded by the lay teacher as a compilation of sug gestions, and not as an extensive study, or final treatise on handwork. As society evolves, education must change to keep apace with it, so may this text serve as a waypost, not a goal. It was not my intention, originally, to write a book; the need developed and I met it as I could. The content of these few pages is the result of eight years of work, including experimental kinder garten and first grade teaching, physical education supervision in the elementary school, and Normal Training School instructing. I do not claim it to be original. It is a compila tion of suggestions and ideas which have come to me from my own little daughter, from the children whom it has been my good fortune to teach in public schools, from Normal School students, from observation of daily life, and from individual study. The projects described have been worked out in an average one-teacher, one-room public school kindergarten or first grade of mixed population. Excerpt from Primary Handwork This book is the outgrowth of long experience as a teacher of primary grades, followed by special study of handwork as a factor in elementary education. It is written with three objects in view: First, to gather into a single volume various methods already in use in the more progressive schools, and for which the best suggestions are scattered through current periodicals: Second, to organize these methods and present them in a simple form for the use of teachers who have had no special training in handwork processes: Third, accepting conditions as they exist in the small town school and the one-room country school, as a basis of organization, to offer suggestions which may be easily adapted to the conditions of any school with a view to bringing present practice into closer harmony with the best educational ideals. No claim is laid to originality, beyond the small details in which one person's interpretation of a large problem will differ from that of another. The projects here outlined have been tested in the Public Schools of Columbia, Missouri, under conditions which are common to towns of about the same size. The point of view has been influenced chiefly by the educational philosophy of Prof. John Dewey, especially as expressed in his essay "The Child and the Curriculum." Excerpt from Suggestions in Handwork Every child born in the image of the Father finds his highest joy in creation. In education we have learned that if we would best develop the three royal H's, the Head, Heart and Hand, it is necessary to provide materials which, with high effort and much love, may be fashioned into simple objects of beauty. Excerpt from Handwork Instruction for Boys In translating this work I have endeavored to be as literal as possible without injury to the English. The clear, concise style of the author has made this easier to do than would be the case with many German writers. For the convenience of English readers all technical terms have been translated, with the exception of a very few which have no English equivalent. In America there is no institution which corresponds exactly to the Volksschule, Burgerschule, Gymnasium, Realschule, Seminar, or Hilfschule. The Volksschule (plural Volksschulen) is the elementary school of Germany. It differs from the public schools of America in several essentials. In the Volksschule every pupil must pay tuition unless he is too poor to do so. Another point of difference is that while the public schools of our country are attended by nearly every child of school age, the German Volksschule loses many children who prefer to attend other schools. The Burgerschule (plural Burgerschulen) as its name indicates, is a school for the middle classes. The Gymnasium (plural Gymnasien) has a course of nine years of classical work preparatory to the university, while the Real-Gymnasium prepares for advanced technical work in the Technische Hochschule, or technical college. Excerpt from Handwork Construction In some schools a teacher is able to prolong courses in basketry or knotting or weaving or embroidery thru many grades, employing that one subject in applied design thruout. In other schools a new subject is taken up each year, or again, handwork is used only by the art - teacher in the design courses, where only one, two or three problems occur each year and the greatest stress is laid upon the design and planing out of the work. I see no reason to quarrel with any of these 'methods; a great deal can be attained thru any one. In all cases, the teacher must consider the processes of development in construction, pattern-making and design. Every problem of handwork presented in any school should be reached by preparatory stages, and should itself be recognized as a definite stepping - stone toward a future subject. Excerpt from First Years in Handicraft AT the present time the United States leads the world in the excellence of its system of public education. Among its prominent features is the training in handwork, begun in the kindergarten and continued throughout the common-school years, whence it passes without break into the manual training high schools and special technical institutions. Of the several periods marking this manual training course the weakest is found in the primary school, dealing with pupils of from seven to eleven or twelve years of age. These children have outgrown the employment of the kindergarten and receiving class, but have yet to attain the growth qualify ing them for the forms of handicraft common in the grammar grades. With a view to partially bridging this hiatus with the help of my many years of intimate acquaintance with children, I have devised these exercises.
