In the spirit of education reform, American education is challenged as never before to meet higher standards of teaching and learning. In order to respond to these challenges, the Office of Educational Research and Improvement convened a study group representing a cross section of individuals and organizations interested in the education of teachers. Ideas and recommendations discussed by the study group centered around six issues: (1) the kind of teaching needed to achieve world class standards; (2) problems in educating teachers for world class standards; (3) teacher education issues specific to core subject areas; (4) needed changes in policies and practices in educating teachers; (5) the potential of current reforms to facilitate needed changes; and (6) recommendations for educating teachers for world class standards. This report includes the following presentations: "What Kind of Teaching Do We Need for World Class Standards?""What Problems Must be Solved in Educating Teachers for World Class Standards? "How Will Changes in the Core Subject Areas Affect the Education of Teachers?""What Changes Are Needed in Policies and Practices That Affect the Education of Teachers?" and "Will Current Reforms Contribute to the Changes Needed?" Two appendices provide a meeting agenda and a list of speakers and participants. (LL)

Raising Standards For American Education written by National Council on Education Standards and Testing (U.S.) and has been published by Department of Education this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Education categories.

Recommendations by the National Council on Education Standards and Testing (NCEST) are provided concerning whether national standards and a system of assessments are desirable and feasible and how national standards and a system of assessments are to be developed and implemented. The NCEST found that the absence of explicit national standards keyed to world-class levels of performance severely hampers the ability to monitor the nation's progress toward the six national education goals. Without well-defined and demanding standards, American education has gravitated toward "de facto" national minimum expectations, with curricula focusing on low-level reading and arithmetic skills and on small amounts of factual material in other content areas. Most current assessment methods cannot determine if students are acquiring the skills/knowledge they need to prosper in the future. These assessments reinforce the emphasis on low-level skills and processing bits of data rather than on problem solving and critical thinking. It is concluded that high national education standards and a voluntary linked system of assessments are desirable and feasible mechanisms for raising expectations, revitalizing instruction, and rejuvenating education reform efforts for all American schools and students. The NCEST will work toward local commitment to high national expectation for achievement for all students, and toward developing Federal, state, and local policies that ensure high quality resources (instructional materials and well-prepared teachers). Acknowledgments; authorization for the NCEST; public comments; the six national education goals; and reports of the standards, assessment, implementation, English, mathematics, science, history, and geography task forces of the NCEST are appended. The lives of America's students, educators, and parents are being significantly touched by the current standards and accountability reform. The Standards Primer explores the historical development of this reform, and compares two different views of educational standards and accountability - technical standards and standards of complexity. How each view impacts curriculum, instruction, and assessment is discussed, and implications of these views for teachers, administrators, school boards, parents, community, and students are presented, along with a discussion of related issues involving equity and ethics on this topic. The Standards Primer provides critical information - including an extensive reference section containing print and nonprint resources - that will lead to informed decision making concerning this national educational reform.

Common Standards For K 12 Education written by National Research Council and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-26 with Education categories.

Standards-based accountability has become a central feature of the public education system in each state and is a theme of national discussions about how achievement for all students can be improved and achievement gaps narrowed. Questions remain, however, about the implementation of standards and accountability systems and about whether their potential benefits have been fully realized. Each of the 50 states has adopted its own set of standards, and though there is overlap among them, there is also wide variation in the ways states have devised and implemented their systems. This variety may have both advantages and disadvantages, but it nevertheless raises a fundamental question: Is the establishment of common K-12 academic standards, which states could voluntarily adopt, the logical next step for standards-based reform? The goal of this book is not to answer the policy question of whether or not common standards would be a good idea. Rather, the book provides an objective look at the available evidence regarding the ways in which standards are currently functioning, the strategies that might be used to pursue common standards, and the issues that doing so might present.

Standards For The English Language Arts written by National Council of Teachers of English and has been published by National Council of Teachers of English (Ncte) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Education categories.

This book describes standards for the English language arts and defines what K-12 students should know about language and be able to do with language. The book presents the current consensus among literacy teachers and researchers about what students should learn in the English language arts--reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and visually representing. The first chapter of the book (Setting Standards in the English Language Arts) addresses defining the standards and the need for standards. The second chapter (Perspectives Informing the English Language Arts Standards) discusses the content, purpose, development, and context of the standards. The third chapter presents the 12 standards in detail. The fourth chapter (Standards in the Classroom) presents elementary, middle-school, and high-school vignettes which illustrate how the standards might be implemented in the classroom. The book concludes that these standards represent not an end but a beginning--a starting point for discussion and action. A glossary (containing more than 100 terms), a list of participants, a history of the standards project, an overview of standards projects, state and international English language arts standards, a 115-item annotated list of resources for teachers, and a comment form are attached.
