This book is an invaluable, instructional field manual for you or any professional who needs to obtain and interpret information gathered directly by and from people, without recourse to a technological intermediary, such as online search. In the role of interviewer, interrogator, or evaluator, there are many opportunities to get it wrong. As advanced as our information-gathering technology may be, it is still impossible to get inside the head of an interviewee by conducting a Google search; so hit them with the tactics spelled out in this book instead in order to protect yourself from being sent in the wrong direction. Inside, you’ll learn practical information regarding all aspects of obtaining and evaluating information. This book serves as a tool-kit that helps build the skills necessary for conducting good interviews and extracting information that is critical for the enterprise in which the interviewer is engaged. As you progress through the book, you will acquire an understanding of research-based behavioral techniques that bolster the success rate of interviews. In addition, the legal factors you need to be aware of prior to conducting an interview for hiring purposes are spelled out. Finally, you’ll acquire the skills necessary to help you evaluate interview information so that decisions made are based on evidence.

Effective Interviewing and Interrogation Techniques was published by Academic Press in 2002. The book describes the Forensic Assessment Interview Technique (FAINT) and Integrated Interrogation Technique (IIT) developed by the authors at their Academy for Scientific Investigative Training. FAINT is applicable to all forensic type interview where the interviewer is attempting to make a determination of the interviewee's truthfulness concerning a specific area of inquiry. It can be, and is used by law enforcement and intelligence agencies, parole and probation officers, psychologists and therapists, security and private investigators, the legal and business communities. FAINT incorporates the assessment of nonverbal behavior, projective analysis of unwitting verbal cues, statement analysis and the Morgan Interview Thematic technique (MITT). The text teaches how to combine and apply and quantify these techniques to reach a numerical conclusion to the truthfulness of the interviewee. It also includes a chapter on how to effectively use the interview process to maximize the collection of information from a prospective employee in the pre-employment selection process. The ITT is a ten-step process developed to obtain confessions from deceptive people in a legal and non-coercive way. This process has been taught and utilized around the world for over twenty years. A revision would allow the following information to be added: 1. A much more in-depth chapter on non-verbal behavior indicative of truth or deception, which would make the book one of the most authoritative writings on this topic, and detailed explanations of the underlying psychophysiological phenomena responsible for it. The authors also recommend increasing the number of photographs in this chapter of the text. 2. Several actual cases the authors have worked on, which would allow the reader a way to practice the skills taught and enhance their confidence and ability to apply the assessment features to their individual situations. 3. Expanded section on analyzing written statements to include both Criteria Based Statement Analysis and Scientific Content Analysis, as well as give some real life statements of cases to allow the reader to apply the lessons taught in the book. 4. Since the publishing of the original text the authors have conducted validity and reliability research on the FAINT assessment, and have developed probability scales that detail the accuracy of decisions made based on their numerical evaluation. They believe this information validated the FAINT process and is extremely important for the readers. In fact it might be more appropriate to include this as an appendix, or encourage the authors to post it on their own website rather than inserting it in the text of the new edition. 5. A new section on instrumental detection of deception and discussion of the use of polygraphs, as well as future trends and experimentation currently being conducted. - Expanded coverage of Statement Analysis, including actual statements from real cases. - New photos to aid in assessing nonverbal behavior. - Added section on assessment of written statements.

This handbook provides readers with coverage of the various interview and interrogation techniques used across the world with victims, witnesses, and suspected offenders. It includes exclusive coverage on countries rarely, if ever, previously reported upon in the literature to any substantive depth. Bringing together a collection of chapters from over 40 countries, this handbook advises and explains the practices used in crime interviewing and informs the reader of contemporary developments hitherto unreported in any current book on interviewing and interrogation. In doing so, the Routledge International Handbook of Investigative Interviewing and Interrogation showcases global exemplars of evidence-based practice informed by scientific research. Building on recent research, including protocols developed in a variety of countries, this book is particularly timely in the wake of the "Méndez Principles", a set of principles developed by the UN (i) to counter the ill-treatment of suspects during police questioning and (ii) to gather more reliable information. This handbook will be an essential reference text across criminology, criminal justice, policing and investigation studies, and law.
