Effective Interviewing and Interrogation Techniques was published by Academic Press in 2002. The book describes the Forensic Assessment Interview Technique (FAINT) and Integrated Interrogation Technique (IIT) developed by the authors at their Academy for Scientific Investigative Training. FAINT is applicable to all forensic type interview where the interviewer is attempting to make a determination of the interviewee's truthfulness concerning a specific area of inquiry. It can be, and is used by law enforcement and intelligence agencies, parole and probation officers, psychologists and therapists, security and private investigators, the legal and business communities. FAINT incorporates the assessment of nonverbal behavior, projective analysis of unwitting verbal cues, statement analysis and the Morgan Interview Thematic technique (MITT). The text teaches how to combine and apply and quantify these techniques to reach a numerical conclusion to the truthfulness of the interviewee. It also includes a chapter on how to effectively use the interview process to maximize the collection of information from a prospective employee in the pre-employment selection process. The ITT is a ten-step process developed to obtain confessions from deceptive people in a legal and non-coercive way. This process has been taught and utilized around the world for over twenty years. A revision would allow the following information to be added: 1. A much more in-depth chapter on non-verbal behavior indicative of truth or deception, which would make the book one of the most authoritative writings on this topic, and detailed explanations of the underlying psychophysiological phenomena responsible for it. The authors also recommend increasing the number of photographs in this chapter of the text. 2. Several actual cases the authors have worked on, which would allow the reader a way to practice the skills taught and enhance their confidence and ability to apply the assessment features to their individual situations. 3. Expanded section on analyzing written statements to include both Criteria Based Statement Analysis and Scientific Content Analysis, as well as give some real life statements of cases to allow the reader to apply the lessons taught in the book. 4. Since the publishing of the original text the authors have conducted validity and reliability research on the FAINT assessment, and have developed probability scales that detail the accuracy of decisions made based on their numerical evaluation. They believe this information validated the FAINT process and is extremely important for the readers. In fact it might be more appropriate to include this as an appendix, or encourage the authors to post it on their own website rather than inserting it in the text of the new edition. 5. A new section on instrumental detection of deception and discussion of the use of polygraphs, as well as future trends and experimentation currently being conducted. - Expanded coverage of Statement Analysis, including actual statements from real cases. - New photos to aid in assessing nonverbal behavior. - Added section on assessment of written statements.

Interviewing And Interrogation written by Don Rabon and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Interviewing in law enforcement categories.

The goal in an interrogation, or in any situation where a person with information might be uncooperative, is to effect a transition in willingness -- ethically and legally. A successful interrogation becomes, in fact, an interview when the subject grows willing to yield details freely and honestly. In order to initiate this transition, the interrogator/interviewer must understand the subject's motivation, the basics of effective inquiry, and techniques of ethical and legal persuasion. They must also recognize the process by which those interviewed can deceive -- and how deception can be detected. This book demonstrates to interviewers the fundamentals of effective inquiry. Rabon has divided the text into six chapters. Each chapter is organized around the concept of process, which indicates that there is a way to proceed and that the procedure involves specific steps. Each of the first five chapters is followed by a series of questions and is accompanied by an appendix containing exercises designed to reinforce the concepts contained in the chapter. The sixth chapter provides an opportunity to apply the inquiry and persuasion techniques developed in previous chapters to the transcript of an actual interview. The new edition places added emphasis on the interview process and the requisite skills of the interviewer. The questioning portion is expanded as well as the detecting deception portion. More emphasis is placed on the "how-to" in this edition of the text. The Teacher's Manual is available electronically on a CD or via email. Law enforcement officers face difficult challenges in light of the new social environment in which they must work. With additional public scrutiny on police tactics and interviewing methods, new techniques must be developed to address the changing political and social landscape. Interviewing and interrogating methods must change in concert with the increased focus on community policing and the public demand to take a softer approach to interviewing and interrogation. The new edition of this book presents positive interviewing techniques to conduct less intrusive, non-threatening interviews and interrogations without forfeiting investigative integrity. Positive interviewing techniques focus on rapport building, which serves as the keystone for successful interviews. and interrogations. Suspects and witnesses who like the people who are interviewing them are more likely to confess or provide information of value. Positive interviewing relies on psychological principles instead of threats and coercion to obtain needed information. The psychological principles presented in this book derive from proven psychological research and have been proven effective in the field. As with the previous book editions, this edition was written with working professionals in mind and contains advanced interviewing techniques. Some basic topics emphasized in other interviewing books will not be addressed. This book was designed as a quick reference guide rather than a comprehensive manual. The enhanced outline format of the text and the extended Table of Contents provide for easy reference, reading, and comprehension. The marketplace is replete with interviewing books and manuals; however, quickly locating information buried in thick manuscripts is costly and time-consuming. The style of this book is consistent with the manner in which law enforcement officers like to receive information: quickly, authoritatively, and to the point.

Despite the obvious importance of eyewitness information in criminal investigation, police receive surprisingly little instruction on how to conduct an effective interview with a cooperative eyewitness. More than half of police departments have no formal training whatsoever for newly appointed investigators. Most texts in police science either completely omit the issue of effective interviewing techniques or provide only superficial coverage. This manual provides guiding principles to effective interviewing, with specific techniques to be used and others to be avoided. There are principles of memory retrieval so that the reader will understand why to employ specific techniques -- for example, when to use open-ended versus direct short-answer questions, effective use of pauses, asking follow-up questions, cues to name and number recall, etc. There is the strategy of interview sequential structure -- that is, what to probe for at the beginning, middle, and end of the interview. Also included are practical exercises and real-world experiences. The book will also be helpful for attorneys in conducting investigative interviews.
