Concepts of Justification in Contemporary Protestant Sermons] The Protestant sermon refers to biblical contents which can only be understood within their context and tradition. Ministry faces a major challenge in interpreting these contents weekly in a theologically and exegetically responsible way. This challenge applies particularly to biblical texts with a prominent position in Protestant tradition, such as the pericopes around Gal 2:16 and Rom 3:28. The author conducts a thorough analysis of 235 sermons, elaborating the pitfalls and benefits resulting from the interplay of text, tradition and sermon, and offers potential solutions to these challenges. Starting with an extensive exegetical commentary, this work explores and elucidates the biblical texts on justification from different exegetical and homiletical perspectives. Thus, it can be located between two crucial characteristics of Protestant religiosity: the doctrine of justification and the biblically-oriented sermon.

Paul's statement that 'letter kills but the spirit gives life' [2 Corinthians 3.6] has had an extraordinary impact on Christian thought through the ages. It has been read both as affirming the saving power of the new covenant in comparison to the old, and as a key to hidden, spiritual meanings in the text of scripture. It is, however, an ambiguous phrase, followed by a tangled story. This book explores the Pauline distinction both in its original context and in its aftermath in the early church, the Reformation and modern Biblical Studies. It then considers a postmodern reversal, where ideas of 'Spirit' are often seen as 'deadly' and the openness of the 'letter' or text as life-affirming, and draws conclusions for Spirit in the world.
