Bisher haben sich nicht allzu viele Forscher der westlichen Islamwissenschaft mit den Koranwissenschaften beschäftigt. In der klassischen arabisch-islamischen Literatur gibt es seit etwa dem 15. (nach islamischem Kalender seit dem 9.) Jahrhundert Monographien über die Koranwissenschaften, zu denen achtzig islamische Wissenschaften gehören. Gegenstand dieser achtzig Wissenschaften ist der Koran als offenbartes Wort Gottes und als Text. Heute werden an den modernen arabisch-islamischen Universitäten die Koranwissenschaften wieder als Studienfach betrieben und neue Arbeiten dazu verfaßt. Diese Studie ist die erste westliche Monographie zu den Koranwissenschaften. Allerdings konnten hier nicht alle Themen der Koranwissenschaften ausführlich behandelt werden, sondern nur ein kleiner, wichtiger Teil davon. Im Brennpunkt der Untersuchung stehen die Gegenüberstellung der westlichen und der muslimischen Forschung auf diesem Gebiet und die unterschiedlichen Sichtweisen der Position des Korans in der Geschichte des Islams.

Shia Islam is a central issue in contemporary politics. Often associated with Iran, Shiite communities actually exist in many Islamic countries. Focusing on the «other Shiites» outside Iran, this book offers a survey of their diversity and multiplicity in the last two centuries. The contributions cover three major topics. The first part deals with the relationship of Shia minorities to the Sunni regimes. Secondly the public affirmation of their identities through specific rituals and social attitudes is analysed. Finally, the third part of this volume examines the strengthening of these identities through traditional religious rituals and cultural performances, or through the re-interpretation and adaptation of these to present-day life. Islamic theology had to wait a long time before being granted a place in the European universities. That happened above all in German-speaking areas, and this led to the development of new theological and religious pedagogical approaches. This volume presents one such approach and discusses it from various perspectives. It takes up different theological and religious pedagogical themes and reflects on them anew from the perspective of the contemporary context. The primary focus is on contemporary challenges and possible answers from the perspective of Islamic theology and religious pedagogy. It discusses general themes like the location of Islamic theology and religious pedagogy at secular European universities. The volume also explores concrete challenges, such as the extent to which Islamic religious pedagogy can be conceptualised anew, how it should deal with its own theological tradition in the contemporary context, and how a positive attitude towards worldview and religious plurality can be cultivated. At issue here are foundations of a new interpretation of Islam that takes into account both a reflective approach to the Islamic tradition and the contemporary context. In doing so, it gives Muslims the opportunity to take their own thinking further.

Angels are a basic tenet of belief in Islam, appearing in various types and genres of text, from eschatology to law and theology to devotional material. This book presents the first comprehensive study of angels in Islam, through an analysis of a collection of traditions (hadīth) compiled by the 15th century polymath Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūtī (d. 911/1505). With a focus on the principal angels in Islam, the author provides an analysis and critical translation of hadith included in al-Suyuti’s al-Haba’ik fi akhbar al-mala’ik (‘The Arrangement of the Traditions about Angels’) – many of which are translated into English for the first time. The book discusses the issues that the hadīth raise, exploring why angels are named in particular ways; how angels are described and portrayed in the hadīth; the ways in which angels interact with humans; and the theological controversies which feature angels. From this it is possible to place al-Suyūtī’s collection in its religious and historical milieu, building on the study of angels in Judaism and Christianity to explore aspects of comparative religious beliefs about angels as well as relating Muslim beliefs about angels to wider debates in Islamic Studies.
