This study deals with the organisation of innovation projects of multinational companies. The focus is on learning processes which occur within the company group as well as those taking place between the company and its regional environment. This work establishes a bridge between organisational and regional learning. Three dilemmas of innovation can thereby be identified: the dilemma between formalisation and flexibilisation mirrors that organisations are defined as stable and structured entities whilst innovation is a process of renewal and change. The configuration dilemma reflects the choice between a concentrated setting and international dispersal of innovation activities. The dilemma of regional (dis)embeddedness points at the tension between exploiting available resources and pursuing a regionally detached strategy. Qualitative case-studies of specific innovation projects provide empirical in-depth insights. This book was awarded the first prize in the catagory Dissertations of the Weser-Ems-Wissenschaftspreis 2011.

Kernstück der Arbeit bilden die Handlungsempfehlungen für ein nachhaltiges Innovationsmanagement in der Sparkassenorganisation, die sich jedoch auch problemlos auf dezentrale Organisationen (Unternehmen) übertragen lassen.

Design Thinking ist eine Innovationsmethode, die seit 2007 an der HPI D-School in Potsdam gelehrt wird und sich zunehmend in der Aus- und Weiterbildungslandschaft in Deutschland etabliert. Vor dem Hintergrund der Digitalisierung, insbesondere von Bildungsformaten, wird in dieser Arbeit die Frage zu beantworten versucht, inwieweit digitale Werkzeuge den Lernprozess von Design Thinking unterstützen können. Hierzu werden zunächst die einzelnen Variablen identifiziert, die den Lernprozess von Design Thinking beeinflussen. Anhand von Experteninterviews werden diese Variablen untersucht und ihr Digitalisierungspotenzial festgestellt. Im Ergebnis unterscheiden sich "weiche" und "harte" Faktoren, die im Lernprozess eine Rolle spielen, deutlich. Während sich kulturelle Aspekte nur sehr eingeschränkt digitalisieren lassen, weisen harte Faktoren wie Prozessanleitungen ein hohes Digitalisierungspotenzial auf. Auf Grundlage dieser Erkenntnisse wird ein Lösungsvorschlag entwickelt. Es entsteht ein digitales Werkzeug, das darauf ausgerichtet ist, den Lernprozess von Design Thinking möglichst ganzheitlich zu unterstützen.

Die Anzahl der Publikationen zum Thema Innovation und deren Förderung in Organisationen ist in den letzten 20 Jahren beträchtlich gestiegen.
