Dalam bukunya Christensen mengenalkan bahwa model disruptive inovasi yaitu sebuah inovasi yang membantu menciptakan pasar dan peluang baru, mengganggu atau merusak sistem pasar yang sudah ada dan pada akhirnya menggantikan teknologi terdahulu. Namun, Francis Fukuyama seorang penulis buku The Great Disruption tahun 1999, memiliki pendapat yang berbeda mengenai pengertian disrupsi tersebut. Ia mengartikan disrupsi sebagai sebuah guncangan yang merusak sistem tatanan sosial di masyarakat. Walaupun pendapat dari kedua pakar tersebut berbeda, jika disimpulkan tetap memiliki suatu makna yang sama.
