Este estudio se centra en la representación y el significado de Madrid en la novelística de las primeras cuatro décadas del s. XX. Se establece el espacio social y su relación con el capitalismo simbólico para afirmar que no sólo Madrid es el corazón de la actividad financiera nacional, sino que también durante el período de la Edad de Plata se consagra como el gran centro cultural de España. El contexto del s. XX caracterizado por el capitalismo incipiente, los desajustes sociales, la violencia civil, unido a las guerras de Cuba, Filipinas, Marruecos, Monjuïc y una larga lista de rebeliones campesinas y huelgas repercuten directamente en la capital de España. Nacen en esta época los escritores profesionales y una industria cultural centrada en Madrid, que lee como autores "regionalistas" a quienes no son madrileños.

El fuerte impulso que la literatura guineoecuatoriana ha sufrido desde la década de los 90 del pasado siglo, la presencia cada vez mayor de la literatura saharaui y de la del norte de Marruecos, ambas en español, así como la emergencia de una serie de autores de origen africano que, sin contacto colonial con nuestras lenguas, optan por utilizarlas como herramienta de creación, han determinado, sin duda, la formación de un corpus heterogéneo, en su consolidación, producción y calidad, que requiere atención y difusión. En este volumen, con la participación de especialistas en la materia, se aborda la escritura de autores y autoras que por motivos históricos derivados de la colonización, por razones de exilio, político u económico, o por elección comunicativa, han asumido el castellano, el catalán o el gallego como lenguas de creación literaria. Partiendo de esta realidad, se analiza en qué medida estas escrituras hispanoafricanas acercan un nuevo panorama literario y social a un lectorado aún no familiarizado con él. En esta misma línea y como ampliación de ella, parece igualmente importante y necesaria una aproximación al lugar que ocupa la recepción y traducción de las literaturas africanas escritas en otras lenguas en el contexto español. A todo ello se dedica el presente volumen.

De Guinea Ecuatorial a las literaturas hispaanoafricanas recoge un conjunto de ensayos de investigadores y estudiosos de diferentes procedencias, que trabajan y consolidan con empeño las literaturas africanas escritas en español, para su legitimación como campo literario y crítico. Estos ensayos hacen un nutrido balance de contextos y textos, límites y prioridades estéticas, tendencias, tensiones entre tradición y renovación en las literaturas hispanoafricanas: ahondan en una variedad de temáticas, entre otras, las interconexiones entre creaciones literarias hispanoafricanas y otras tradiciones literarias (hispanoamericanas), su singularidad frente a las literaturas africanas escritas en otras lenguas (francés, inglés, portugués…), las peculiaridades de las voces hispanocamerunesas, las conjunciones y disyunciones en la narrativa de Donato Ndongo, las estrategias en la construcción de la identidad literaria, las interrelaciones entre lengua-identidadliteratura, la apropiación y la elaboración de una lengua propia de escritura, la representación de una alteridad lingüística y cultural. En fin, de manera general, los diferentes trabajos de críticos, filólogos, lingüistas, abren amplias perspectivas y muestran la inédita vigencia de una literatura africana en lengua española, desde un acercamiento de autores, textos individualizados, colocados en su tiempo, en la historia literaria nacional y continental, en su espacio de producción, sin obviar sus relaciones con los procedimientos y las formas orales, la interdependencia entre creación, edición, difusión y recepción. De Guinea Ecuatorial a las literaturas hispanoafricanas refuerza una red productiva de estudiosos, desde un hispanismo alternativo, que contribuyen en la irradiación de las literaturas africanas en lengua española y en la inscripción de los estudios literarios hispanoafricanos en la investigación científica, en la enseñanza universitaria y en el ámbito editorial en el marco global actual de inevitables confluencias culturales e interacciones literarias.

Topographies of Fascism offers the first comprehensive exploration of how Spanish fascist writing – essays, speeches, articles, propaganda materials, poems, novels, and memoirs – represented and created space from the early 1920s until the late 1950s. Nil Santiáñez contends that fascism expressed its views on the state, the nation, and the society in spatial terms (for example, the state as a “building,” the nation as an “organic unity,” and society as the “people’s community”), just as its adherents celebrated fascism in its architecture, public spectacles, and military rituals. While Topographies of Fascism centres on Spain, a nation that produced a large number of fascist texts focused on space, it also draws on works written by key German, Italian, and French fascist politicians and intellectuals. Ultimately, it provides an innovative model for analyzing the comparable yet often overlooked strategies of symbolic representation and production of space in fascist political and cultural discourse.

Antonio López García’s Everyday Urban Worlds: A Philosophy of Painting is the first book to give the famed Spanish artist the critical attention he deserves. Born in Tomelloso in 1936 and still living in the Spanish capital today, Antonio López has long cultivated a reputation for impressive urban scenes—but it is urban time that is his real subject. Going far beyond mere artist biography, Benjamin Fraser explores the relevance of multiple disciplines to an understanding of the painter’s large-scale canvasses. Weaving selected images together with their urban referents—and without ever straying too far from discussion of the painter’s oeuvre, method and reception by critics—Fraser pulls from disciplines as varied as philosophy, history, Spanish literature and film, cultural studies, urban geography, architecture, and city planning in his analyses. The book begins at ground level with one of the artist’s most recognizable images, the Gran Vía, which captures the urban project that sought to establish Madrid as an emblem of modernity. Here, discussion of the artist’s chosen painting style—one that has been referred to as a ‘hyperrealism’—is integrated with the central street’s history, the capital’s famous literary figures, and its filmic representations, setting up the philosophical perspective toward which the book gradually develops. Chapter two rises in altitude to focus on Madrid desde Torres Blancas, an urban image painted from the vantage point provided by an iconic high-rise in the north-central area of the city. Discussion of the Spanish capital’s northward expansion complements a broad view of the artist’s push into representations of landscape and allows for the exploration of themes such as political conflict, social inequality, and the accelerated cultural change of an increasingly mobile nation during the 1960s. Chapter three views Madrid desde la torre de bomberos de Vallecas and signals a turn toward political philosophy. Here, the size of the artist’s image itself foregrounds questions of scale, which Fraser paints in broad strokes as he blends discussions of artistry with the turbulent history of one of Madrid’s outlying districts and a continued focus on urban development and its literary and filmic resonance. Antonio López García’s Everyday Urban Worlds also includes an artist timeline, a concise introduction and an epilogue centering on the artist’s role in the Spanish film El sol del membrillo.
