Fondane, junto a su maestro Lev Shestov, es uno de los filósofos más importantes del siglo XX, en la estela del primer existencialismo que se dio particularmente en Francia, aquella corriente de pensamiento de comienzos de siglo que combatió original y fervientemente la deshumanización del ser humano. Su pensamiento impactó en Camus y en Sartre, y fue él mismo antes de morir en Auschwitz quien criticó las obras más importantes de estos dos famosos existencialistas por haber desviado y desvirtuado el mensaje original de los precursores del existencialismo: Pascal, Kierkegaard, Shestov y Heidegger. Emil Cioran comentaba aludiendo a su estilo, que «él como Shestov, amaba partir de una cita, de donde luego iba sacando conclusiones de lo más inesperadas». Al respecto de su importancia en el panorama cultural de la época añade Stéphane Lupasco «Hoy sabemos demasiado sobre el existencialismo que los jóvenes fenomenólogos franceses han estado lanzando, desde 1943, desde París a todo el mundo, para que insistamos en ello.
