Pinochet S Economists written by Juan Gabriel Valdes and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-08-17 with Business & Economics categories.

This book tells the extraordinary story of the Pinochet regime's economists, known as the "Chicago Boys". It explores the roots of their ideas and their sense of mission, following their training as economists at the Department of Economics at the University of Chicago. After their return to Chile, the "Chicago Boys" took advantage of the opportunity afforded them by the 1973 military coup to launch the first radical free market strategy implemented in a developing country. The ideological strength of their mission and the military authoritarianism of General Pinochet combined to transform an economy that, following the return to democracy, has stabilized and is now seen as a model for Latin America. This book, written by a political scientist, examines the neo-liberal economists and their perspective on the market. It also narrates the history of the transfer of ideas from the industrialized world to a developing country, which will be of particular interest to economists.

La Frontera written by Thomas Miller Klubock and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-16 with History categories.

In La Frontera, Thomas Miller Klubock offers a pioneering social and environmental history of southern Chile, exploring the origins of today’s forestry "miracle" in Chile. Although Chile's forestry boom is often attributed to the free-market policies of the Pinochet dictatorship, La Frontera shows that forestry development began in the early twentieth century when Chilean governments turned to forestry science and plantations of the North American Monterey pine to establish their governance of the frontier's natural and social worlds. Klubock demonstrates that modern conservationist policies and scientific forestry drove the enclosure of frontier commons occupied by indigenous and non-indigenous peasants who were defined as a threat to both native forests and tree plantations. La Frontera narrates the century-long struggles among peasants, Mapuche indigenous communities, large landowners, and the state over access to forest commons in the frontier territory. It traces the shifting social meanings of environmentalism by showing how, during the 1990s, rural laborers and Mapuches, once vilified by conservationists and foresters, drew on the language of modern environmentalism to critique the social dislocations produced by Chile's much vaunted neoliberal economic model, linking a more just social order to the biodiversity of native forests.

An adequate nutrition provides us with the necessary energy for the appropriate functioning and care of our body, and is the first defence against diseases. However, many people today still do not have access to food, do not eat enough or do not eat poorly. Nutrition problems (malnutrition, obesity, etc.) encompass inappropriate choices and practices that can be addressed through effective public policies. In this context, parliamentary alliances such as the Parliamentary Front against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean, and specialized agencies such as FAO, play a key role in educating consumers and preventing diseases. During an event on the role of parliamentarians in improving global nutrition, on 14 June 2018 at FAO headquarters, Senator Guido Girardi Lavin presented the Chilean initiative aimed at fighting against unhealthy foods. Also participating at the event were Jesús Manuel Gracia Aldaz, former Ambassador of Spain to the Italian State, and Anna Lartey, Director of FAO’s Nutrition and Food Systems Division. This publication is a collection of the speeches that took place on this occasion.

The Judicialization Of Politics In Latin America written by Rachel Sieder and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-30 with Social Science categories.

During the last two decades the judiciary has come to play an increasingly important political role in Latin America. Constitutional courts and supreme courts are more active in counterbalancing executive and legislative power than ever before. At the same time, the lack of effective citizenship rights has prompted ordinary people to press their claims and secure their rights through the courts. This collection of essays analyzes the diverse manifestations of the judicialization of politics in contemporary Latin America, assessing their positive and negative consequences for state-society relations, the rule of law, and democratic governance in the region. With individual chapters exploring Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, it advances a comparative framework for thinking about the nature of the judicialization of politics within contemporary Latin American democracies.

Chile has benefited from strong growth and well targeted social programs over recent years that have resulted in a reduction of poverty at all income levels. In analyzing the progress in poverty reduction made in Chile, the different dimensions of poverty, including income and access to social services are reviewed. This World Bank report updates information on development in Chile through a focus on the years 1994 - 1998. It has developed and applied a methodology for the estimate of the imputed income transfers from government subsidies in health, education, and housing for the years 1990, 1994, 1996, and 1998. Access to social services, demonstrated by reduced infant mortality, increased life expectancy, and housing availability, have shown significant improvements in the evaluation period. Despite this achievement, income inequality remains relatively high and unemployment, among younger and poorer workers, is a severe problem.
