Shall we be destined to the days of eternity, on holy-days,as well as working days, to be shewing the RELICKS OF LEARNING, as monks do the relicks of their saints – without working one – one single miracle with them? Laurence Sterne, Tristram Shandy This book deals with information processing; so it is far from being a book on information theory (which would be built on description and estimation). The reader will be shown the horse, but not the saddle. At any rate, at the very beginning, there was a series of lectures on “Information theory, through the looking-glass of an algebraist”, and, as years went on, a steady process of teaching and learning made the material evolve into the present form. There still remains an algebraic main theme: algorithms intertwining polynomial algebra and matrix algebra, in the shelter of signal theory. A solid knowledge of elementary arithmetic and Linear Algebra will be the key to a thorough understanding of all the algorithms working in the various bit-stream landscapes we shall encounter. This priority of algebra will be the thesis that we shall defend. More concretely: We shall treat, in ?ve chapters of increasing di?culty, ?ve sensibly di?erent subjects in Discrete Mathem- ics. The?rsttwochaptersondatacompaction(losslessdatacompression)and cryptography are on an undergraduate level – the most di?cult mathematical prerequisite will be a sound understanding of quotient rings, especially of- nite ?elds (mostly in characteristic 2).

Access to and participation in education are critical issues in contemporary South Africa. Awareness of inclusiveness and equality is not recent, having possibly first been described in the dawn of the millennium by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Drawing from the current framings in the SADC education systems the contributors argue that ICT has a key role to play in transformation, Africanisation and decolonisation of education. Contributors are: Skye Adams, Najma Agherdien, Andrew Crouch, Andries Du Plessis, Nazira Hoosen, Katijah Khoza-Shangase, Mhulaheni Maguvhe, Khetsiwe Masuku, Sharon Moonsamy, Munyane Mophosho, Nomfundo Moroe, Ramashego Shila Mphahlele, Ndileleni Mudzielwana, Shonisani Mulovhedzi, Anniah Mupawose, Mapula Ngoepe, Moshe Phoshoko, Dhanashree Pillay, Roshni Pillay, Ben Sebothoma and Susan Thuketana.

This topical survey provides an overview of the current state of the art in technology use in mathematics education, including both practice-oriented experiences and research-based evidence, as seen from an international perspective. Three core themes are discussed: Evidence of effectiveness; Digital assessment; and Communication and collaboration. The survey’s final section offers suggestions for future trends in technology-rich mathematics education and provides a research agenda reflecting those trends. Predicting what lower secondary mathematics education might look like in 2025 with respect to the role of digital tools in curricula, teaching and learning, it examines the question of how teachers can integrate physical and virtual experiences to promote a deeper understanding of mathematics. The issues and findings presented here provide an overview of current research and offer a glimpse into a potential future characterized by the effective integration of technology to support mathematics teaching and learning at the lower secondary level.

Mathematics Education and Technology-Rethinking the Terrain revisits the important 1985 ICMI Study on the influence of computers and informatics on mathematics and its teaching. The focus of this book, resulting from the seventeenth Study led by ICMI, is the use of digital technologies in mathematics teaching and learning in countries across the world. Specifically, it focuses on cultural diversity and how this diversity impinges on the use of digital technologies in mathematics teaching and learning. Within this focus, themes such as mathematics and mathematical practices; learning and assessing mathematics with and through digital technologies; teachers and teaching; design of learning environments and curricula; implementation of curricula and classroom practice; access, equity and socio-cultural issues; and connectivity and virtual networks for learning, serve to organize the study and bring it coherence. Providing a state-of-the-art view of the domain with regards to research, innovating practices and technological development, Mathematics Education and Technology-Rethinking the Terrain is of interest to researchers and all those interested in the role that digital technology plays in mathematics education.

As we enter into the 21"Century, the presence of technology, particularly techno-science, in everyday life is overwhelming. Institutions in the modem world are affected by this presence. Like Janus, the ancient Roman god whose double-faced head signified his knowledge of the present and the future, education has always been a two-faced enterprise. The past establishes goals and methods of Education, and the other face tries to capture the future and suggests and proposes new directions of thought and new styles of behavior for the generation which, in a few years, will take over both routines and societal innovation. History tells us that this face of Education has always been sensitive to emerging technologies. Technologies of communication and information have been particularly influential in new directions of society, in particular of education. The transition from orality to writing marked a new role for the teacher. From the sole repository of accumulated knowledge, the teacher became a guide and interpreter of registered knowledge. The emergence of hardware, in the form of documents and books, initiated a companionship between teacher and hardware. It is also remarkable how the emergence of writing strengthened individual memory, contrary to the concerns of Thamus when Theuth explained to him the discovery of writing. The conservative king was afraid that the new invention would implant forgetfulness in the souls of men.
