Excerpt from Elements of Religion and Religious TeachingI hope that nothing will offend you, or even disturb your own meditations on this subject.A period like this, set aside from our ordin ary duties and given to consideration of a matter of cardinal importance may be full of benefit, derived by chance from a speaker's words, but more certainly from the listener's mind, if he will listen to himself.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Teacher and the Child: Elements of Moral and Religious Teaching in the Day School, the Home, and the Sunday School This little book is published in full consciousness of the quickened interest in the child and his education, whether intellectual, moral or religious, which is so marked a feature of the new century in all the most progressive nations of the world. Owing to this deepened interest in the child, his nature and his nurture, volunteer and professional educators alike are beginning to look earnestly towards sociology and the sciences of psychology and ethics for guidance and help in their work. In the following pages, certain aspects of education, especially the moral training of young children, are treated with the greatest possible simplicity, yet an effort is made to present some of the most recent and living thought with which these associated sciences supply us. The book, which is new, if at all, only in aim and setting and not in subject-matter, is not written for the initiated few, but for the interested many. Technical language is avoided. If any attempt had been made at expansion or revision before publication, one would not have known where to begin or to end, and the character of the Lectures would soon have been completely changed. Excerpt from Types of Religious Experience, Christian and Non-ChristianThis collection of papers is divided into three parts. The first three contributions which make up the first part are methodo logical in character. Since there is no equivalent for the German and French expressions 'religionswissenschaft' and science des religions' in English, History of Religions has been used pars pro toto as the term for the field of descriptive studies. The Place of the History of Religions in the Study of Theology (2) is discussed in the first paper.the second, which, in many respects, contains the core of the author's thought, summarizes his con cept of the nature of religious experience and a phenomenology of its forms of expression. It is entitled Universals in Religion because it Offers an outline of the structural elements the author believes to be characteristic of religion wherever and whenever found. It represents an attempt to go beyond the traditional exposition of the manifestations of religion (cf. Van der Leeuw's Phenomenology; Lehmann's Lehre von der Erscheinungswelt; Eliade's Morphologie) in the direction of what used to be called 'natural Theology, ' but with the endeavour to avoid the rationalistic preoccupation of the earlier (eighteenth-century) conceptlons. This essay has not been published before. The third essay on The Notion of the Classical in the Study of Religion (3) develops a construct to be used by the teacher and student of religions to steer a middle course between a historistic preoccupation with completeness of data in the history of religions, and arbitrary selection based upon a traditional or freely chosen Viewpoint. All three papers owe their existence to reflections which have grown out of the experience of teaching; they, as well as several of the following contributions, are meant to stimulate thought on the way in which instruction in our field might be improved.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Principles of Religious Teaching Religious pedagogy is one of the newer branches of the science of education. Despite the fact that teaching was made central by the Founder of Christianity both in his practice and in the Great Commission to his disciples and the further fact that many of the most notable achievements of the church through the ages have been due to the faithful exercise of this central function, modern church leaders, until very recent years, have given scant attention to the development of the principles and technique of religious teaching. Rapid progress has been made during the last two decades, but much pioneer work yet remains to be done. The author offers this brief treatment as a modest contribution in a rapidly developing field. The book does not assume to be anything more than an introduction to a subject that deserves far more adequate treatment. Being constantly reminded of the limitations of teacher-training classes, particularly in the matter of time for study and the practical difficulty of completing long courses, the author has felt the necessity of brevity in the discussion of many topics that he would have preferred to treat in much greater detail. In an earlier volume (The Pupil) it was suggested that practically the whole of the teacher's task is comprehended in the term "religious nurture." The problem that engaged attention throughout the textbook was, How may we most effectively nurture the moral and religious life of the pupil? The present discussion may be considered a further study of the same general problem. In the earlier study the question constantly in mind was, What are the pupil's needs that we must meet in nurturing his moral and religious life? In our present study we continue to regard the pupil as central and keep his needs constantly before us, but the problem that chiefly engages attention is rather the process by which the religious life may be developed. Our question is, What are the means by which the teacher may most effectively nurture the pupil's moral and religious life? Excerpt from A Social Theory of Religious Education What consequences for religious education follow from the now widely accepted social interpretation of the Christian mes sage? The present work is an attempt to answer this question. The answer is not simple. For the social message does not require us merely to insert this or that new duty into our present scheme of living, but also to judge every detail of conduct from a higher point of view. We are required to organize the whole of life upon a different level. It would be strange indeed if the new meaning that this gives to every-day affairs did not change our outlook upon child life. If we are to be logical and practical in our social Christianity, we must revise our policies with respect to children at least as much as our policies with respect to adults. The chapters that follow undertake to show the directions that this revision will need to take. As we proceed, it will appear that the whole perspective of religious education undergoes a change. The central purpose, to begin with, grows more specific because the nature of good ness is seen to be as concrete as the neighbor who lives next door. Christian experience comes out of the clouds, because in our dealings with our brother whom we have seen we are deal ing with the Father whom we have not seen - yes, we here come into relation with what is deepest in his character and purposes. To Christian ears these statements do not sound strange, per haps, yet when they are applied to the religious life of the young they do sing a new melody. A profounder significance attaches to the will of a child, and especially to his relations with persons, whether children or adults. Excerpt from Suggestions for a Syllabus in Religious Teaching This book is the work of one who has for several years given much thought and time to religious teaching, especially in public elementary schools. It is the outcome of a long experience as well as of a deep interest in this, the most important of all the sides of education. It appears at a time when many teachers, those who teach in the home as well as those who teach in school, feel the need for more guidance in the preparation and arrangement of their lessons in the Christian Faith. Such will, I believe, find in this book, as I have found, very much that is practically useful and educationally valuable. Yet more will they be touched by the spirit of the book, by its insight and candour, and by its sympathy with the needs of those who teach and of those who learn. Excerpt from Religious Teaching in Secondary Schools: Suggestions to Teachers and Parents I have taken my material where I found it, usually with careful reference to its sources; and one chief use of this short compilation will be to draw the attention of teachers to useful and accessible books, which have been freely used for it.
