Excerpt from The Principles of Religious Teaching Religious pedagogy is one of the newer branches of the science of education. Despite the fact that teaching was made central by the Founder of Christianity both in his practice and in the Great Commission to his disciples and the further fact that many of the most notable achievements of the church through the ages have been due to the faithful exercise of this central function, modern church leaders, until very recent years, have given scant attention to the development of the principles and technique of religious teaching. Rapid progress has been made during the last two decades, but much pioneer work yet remains to be done. The author offers this brief treatment as a modest contribution in a rapidly developing field. The book does not assume to be anything more than an introduction to a subject that deserves far more adequate treatment. Being constantly reminded of the limitations of teacher-training classes, particularly in the matter of time for study and the practical difficulty of completing long courses, the author has felt the necessity of brevity in the discussion of many topics that he would have preferred to treat in much greater detail. In an earlier volume (The Pupil) it was suggested that practically the whole of the teacher's task is comprehended in the term "religious nurture." The problem that engaged attention throughout the textbook was, How may we most effectively nurture the moral and religious life of the pupil? The present discussion may be considered a further study of the same general problem. In the earlier study the question constantly in mind was, What are the pupil's needs that we must meet in nurturing his moral and religious life? In our present study we continue to regard the pupil as central and keep his needs constantly before us, but the problem that chiefly engages attention is rather the process by which the religious life may be developed. Our question is, What are the means by which the teacher may most effectively nurture the pupil's moral and religious life? Excerpt from How to Teach Religion: Principles and Methods Children can be brought to a religious character and experience through right nurture and training in religion. This is the fundamental assumption on which the present volume rests, and it makes the religious edu cation oi children the most strategic opportunity and greatest responsibility of the church, standing out above all other obligations whatever. Further, the successful teaching of religion is based on the same laws that apply to other forms of teach ing; hence teachers in church schools need and have a right to all the help that a Scientific pedagogy per meated by an evangelistic spirit can give them. They also have the obligation to avail themselves of this help for the meeting of their great task. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from How to Teach Religion It aims to state in a clear, simple, and non-technical way some of the funda mental principles oi education and then to show how these may be made use of in the teaching of religion. No doubt, in aiming at a popular state ment of these principles we have lost something in technical accuracy, but we have preferred to be understood by those for whom we have written than to be commended for strictly professional vir tues by those who may never read our book. Excerpt from Catholic Religion: A Statement of Christian Teaching and History No less remarkable than the external solidarity of the church, and indeed the secret of it, is her consist ent and coherent system of teachings and practices. From the mighty moral principles that reach down to the depths of human nature, to the symbolic regalia of her holiday pageants, all the church's doctrines of faith and precepts of morals and forms of worship are related to a few great truths, and are, in their time and place, the natural and proper expression of those truths. Excerpt from The Vacation Religious Day School: Teacher's Manual of Principles and Programs The vacation religious day school has passed the experimental stage. It is now widely recognized as a very useful institution. It can be adapted to the needs of all types of communities. The concept has back of it twenty years of practical experience. Its technique has been developed under the careful study of leaders who are familiar with the philosophy of both general education and religious education. The publication of a volume that adequately sets forth its principles and methods is not only justifiable, it has come to be a practical necessity. Back of the rapidly increasing popularity of the idea of the daily vacation school of religion are the convictions that - First: The Sunday schools, because of their many limitations, cannot carry the full responsibility for the religious training of the children and youth of America. In addition to their highly important work there will be required a substantial program of week-day religious instruction. Second: The responsibility for this week-day religious instruction cannot rest upon the public school boards, but it does rest upon the churches of the community. Third: In view of the constitutional provision for the separation of church and state and of the guarantee of religious freedom to all, week-day religious instruction must be conducted, necessarily, upon a voluntary basis and without the use of public funds. Fourth: The purpose of vacation religious day schools is to instruct the children in fundamental religious values common to all denominations. This instruction will in no way interfere with the work of the Sunday school, but, rather, will strengthen it.
