Excerpt from How to Teach Religion It aims to state in a clear, simple, and non-technical way some of the funda mental principles oi education and then to show how these may be made use of in the teaching of religion. No doubt, in aiming at a popular state ment of these principles we have lost something in technical accuracy, but we have preferred to be understood by those for whom we have written than to be commended for strictly professional vir tues by those who may never read our book. Excerpt from How to Teach Religion: Principles and Methods Children can be brought to a religious character and experience through right nurture and training in religion. This is the fundamental assumption on which the present volume rests, and it makes the religious edu cation oi children the most strategic opportunity and greatest responsibility of the church, standing out above all other obligations whatever. Further, the successful teaching of religion is based on the same laws that apply to other forms of teach ing; hence teachers in church schools need and have a right to all the help that a Scientific pedagogy per meated by an evangelistic spirit can give them. They also have the obligation to avail themselves of this help for the meeting of their great task. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Principles of Religious Teaching Religious pedagogy is one of the newer branches of the science of education. Despite the fact that teaching was made central by the Founder of Christianity both in his practice and in the Great Commission to his disciples and the further fact that many of the most notable achievements of the church through the ages have been due to the faithful exercise of this central function, modern church leaders, until very recent years, have given scant attention to the development of the principles and technique of religious teaching. Rapid progress has been made during the last two decades, but much pioneer work yet remains to be done. The author offers this brief treatment as a modest contribution in a rapidly developing field. The book does not assume to be anything more than an introduction to a subject that deserves far more adequate treatment. Being constantly reminded of the limitations of teacher-training classes, particularly in the matter of time for study and the practical difficulty of completing long courses, the author has felt the necessity of brevity in the discussion of many topics that he would have preferred to treat in much greater detail. In an earlier volume (The Pupil) it was suggested that practically the whole of the teacher's task is comprehended in the term "religious nurture." The problem that engaged attention throughout the textbook was, How may we most effectively nurture the moral and religious life of the pupil? The present discussion may be considered a further study of the same general problem. In the earlier study the question constantly in mind was, What are the pupil's needs that we must meet in nurturing his moral and religious life? In our present study we continue to regard the pupil as central and keep his needs constantly before us, but the problem that chiefly engages attention is rather the process by which the religious life may be developed. Our question is, What are the means by which the teacher may most effectively nurture the pupil's moral and religious life? Excerpt from Suggestions for a Syllabus in Religious Teaching This book is the work of one who has for several years given much thought and time to religious teaching, especially in public elementary schools. It is the outcome of a long experience as well as of a deep interest in this, the most important of all the sides of education. It appears at a time when many teachers, those who teach in the home as well as those who teach in school, feel the need for more guidance in the preparation and arrangement of their lessons in the Christian Faith. Such will, I believe, find in this book, as I have found, very much that is practically useful and educationally valuable. Yet more will they be touched by the spirit of the book, by its insight and candour, and by its sympathy with the needs of those who teach and of those who learn. Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Excerpt from The Mother-Teacher of Religion This is impossible because of the very nature of religion. For religion is life at its truest and best. Religious training is, therefore, training in a way of living, and not merely a set of facts to be learned or formulas to be repeated. Religious impressions and concepts must be built daily into the system of habits and conduct Which is constantly being developed. Religious ideas should grow up along With the child's other ideas and SO become an inseparable part of his structure of thought. Religious interests and emotions Should develop as a part of the child's Whole range of feelings and motives. Excerpt from The Teaching of Religion When we look about us to-day we are appalled at the evils that have crept into human society. The world is just passing through a crisis brought on by materialistic thought. These post-bellum times are called the reconstruction period. The great moral forces of the day are seeking a remedy for the ills of society. Thoughtful men are beginning to realize that religion is the only cure for those ills. N ow more than ever, perhaps, they are convinced that human society must be guided by a higher principle than mere human statutes. This principle must be divine law expressed in terms of religion that operates in men's lives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
