Around the world, the production and use of nanomaterials, as well as carcinogenic, mutagenic, reprotoxic substances (CMR) and endocrine disruptors has systematically increased. The increase in production has exposed workers to hazardous substances in practically all branches of the world economy. Readers will have access to up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge on emerging risks related to nanomaterials, endocrine disruptors, reprotoxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic substances, which are related to the development of technologies and workplaces. The book will provide the tools for occupational risk assessment of chemical substances for which there are no safety levels of exposure as well as an indication of methods and measurements to protect human health and reduce chemical risks at the workplace. This book creates awareness for employers, employees and safety experts about emerging risks related to chemical agents resulting in the reduction of cancer, reproductive system diseases, cases of abnormal child development, hormonal system disorders leading to abnormal metabolism, obesity, and diabetes. Features: Comprehensive information on emerging and newly identified chemical hazards Delivers the latest data on methods and tools for identification, assessing and reducing health risks Provides practical occupational safety advice and recommendations Real life examples from measurements carried out in the workplaces "The monograph, due to the high universality of its considerations, can be addressed to a very wide audience. It is an important compendium of knowledge, which can be used by health and safety services, employers, people designing new technologies and those interested in this issue. It is a valuable and up-to-date study, among others because it uses the latest literature and quotes current legal acts.” —Sławomir Czerczak, Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Poland

The Community strategy on heath and safety at work 2002-2006 called on the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work to set up a risk observatory to anticipate new and emerging risks. Within this context, a series of four expert forecasts were formulated with the aim of providing as comprehensive as possible a picture of the potential emerging risks in the world of work. Three reports on emerging physical risks, biological risks and psychosocial risks have already been published. This publication (the last one of the series) presents the results of the forecast on emerging chemical risks related to occupational safety and health based on an expert survey and a literature review.

The indispensable resource for health professionals on potentially unsafe chemicals--now fully updated Proctor and Hughes' Chemical Hazards of the Workplace, Fifth Edition provides a comprehensive reference text for health professionals who need toxicology data on chemicals that may be encountered in various work settings. Building on the success of the Fourth Edition-already a standard text-this new edition updates and revises the more than 600 entries of that text, and also adds monographs on new compounds. Introductory chapters cover toxicological concepts, clinical manifestations of exposure, the diagnosis of occupational disease, and industrial hygiene aspects of chemical exposures. The rest of the text consists of more than 625 alphabetically arranged entries on individual compounds, each of which includes: * Chemical formula * CAS number * 2003 ACGIH (American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists) threshold limit value * Synonyms * Physical properties * Sources of exposure * Routes of exposure * Toxicological data The toxicological data includes both acute and chronic effects, especially as related to any known exposure levels. The data emphasizes human studies and cases over animal data whenever sufficient information is available, and addresses any known carcinogenic, mutagenic, fetotoxic, or other reproductive effects. Clinical information is presented in a succinct narrative form to aid in understanding. Easy to use, in-depth, and comprehensive, Proctor and Hughes' Chemical Hazards of the Workplace, Fifth Edition offers occupational health physicians, nurses, industrial hygienists, and other safety professionals an invaluable and up-to-date resource.

Emerging Contaminants written by Kathleen Sellers and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-15 with Science categories.

Emerging Contaminants: Anticipating Developments examines the factors that have led "new" environmental contaminants to emerge in the past and combines the lessons learned to anticipate potential new developments. The analyses described in this book originate in multiple disciplines: the science of toxicology; environmental law and regulation; the field of product stewardship; and the social science which explains why ideas take hold. Over a dozen case studies of contaminants that emerged as environmental issues over the last hundred years illustrate crucial points. The results of the analyses in this book support a step-by-step method to assess the potential for a contaminant to emerge, and a framework to apply those conclusions to managing site liabilities. Features: Describes an unprecedented understanding of why contaminants emerge as issues, based on a multidisciplinary analysis Makes abstract concepts tangible, basing analyses on data and illustrating key points with case studies Enables readers to anticipate and prepare to manage future challenges associated with emerging chemicals Presents an analytical framework for companies to assess and manage business risks Written for regulators, policymakers, industry professionals with responsibility for contaminated site management, as well as attorneys, and consultants, this book provides a framework for anticipating the emergence of new contaminants so that the risks–whether to human health and the environment or to a business–can be anticipated and appropriately managed.

The past 40 years have seen a phenomenal growth in globally oriented public and private initiatives related to chemical and environmental issues. The groundbreaking 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm was the event responsible for initiating framework for global environmental policies, including those addressing chemical safety. It gave rise to the first World Environment Day and the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme, leading the way to the acknowledgement that sustainable development is the most logical and viable pathway to preserve and enhance our environment for future generations. Chemicals, Environment, Health: A Global Management Perspective presents an overview of the noteworthy conferences, organizations, and international treaties that focus on chemicals management and policy. It takes into account special challenges faced by developing countries regarding chemicals safety. From the Stockholm Conference to follow-ups in Rio and Johannesburg, it provides concise coverage of a vast swath of information. It highlights pivotal agreements such as the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions, the more expansive Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management, as well as key regional agreements such as the European Union’s REACH legislation. The book includes invited essays in areas such as emergencies and financing instruments, and offers a clear look at future challenges and opportunities. Written by a team of authors from all continents, with backgrounds in international organizations, national governments, academia, industry, and NGOs, the book reflects a wide experience from a multitude of perspectives. A valuable guidebook to global chemicals management cooperation, this book reviews and analyzes multi-lateral efforts established to address the potential risks of chemicals on the world stage.
