This edited book offers insight into the linguistic construction of prejudice and discrimination in social media. Drawing on the outputs of a three-year research project, NETLANG, involving scholars from five European countries (Portugal, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland and Poland), as well as on external contributions from participants in the project’s final conference, the collection brings together a variety of linguistic approaches to the study of online hate speech, ranging from pragmatic to syntactic, morphological, and lexical analyses, with a considerable focus on Natural Language Processing and Corpus Linguistics. Data from English, Portuguese, Danish, Lithuanian, Persian, Polish, and Slovenian are examined, along with various geopolitical contexts for hate speech, especially anti-refugee and anti-immigrant discourse. The authors explore a continuum of overt to covert textual data, namely: (i) structural elements, such as syntactic and morphological patterns which recur throughout the texts; (ii) lexical and stylistic elements, revealing the often implicit ways in which vocabulary choices and rhetorical devices signal the expression of hate; and (iii) interactional elements, concerning the pragmatic relationships established in online communicative exchanges. The chapters cover numerous types of prejudice, such as sexism, racism, nationalism, antisemitism, religious intolerance, ageism, and homo/transphobia. The book will be of interest to an academic readership in Linguistics, Media Studies, Communication Studies, and Social Sciences.

This book offers an academic dialogue between news values construction and readers' evaluative response in Weibo news package from the interpersonal perspective. The study focuses on the under-researched field of news reception, i.e. how the media-reader relationship can be influenced by readers' feedback. By combing multimodal discourse analysis and corpus methods, this book aims to address the following three research questions regarding the text-reader relationship in Weibo news package: (1) what are the gains and losses in the transfer of news values constructed across platforms and news media? (2) how are Chinese language and emoji collaborated to realize attitudinal meanings and advance readers' positions in news comments? (3) how does readers' response overlap or mismatch with particular news value in a story across news text-reader relations, reader-reader relations and extra text-reader relations? The book has social, theoretical and pedagogical implications for the changing landscape of (Chinese) news discourse and audience studies. Socially, the findings of news and comments analysis show that news value decisions can be negotiated due to readers' active engagement via the social media commenting function. Theoretically, a responsive model of evaluative readings has been built for a better understanding of social media multimodal comments through the lens of reading positions and emoji-text interactions. The book is of interest to researchers in media and communication studies, but can also be used as a reference book for (under)graduate students in social semiotics, linguistics and journalism to learn how to analyze multimodal and interactive (news) texts on social media by triangulation of theories and methodologies.

It is now an acknowledged fact in the world of linguistics that the concept of evaluation is crucial, and that there is very little – if any – discourse that cannot be analyzed through the prism of its evaluative content. This book presents some of the latest developments in the study of this phenomenon. Released more than a decade later than Hunston and Thompson’s (2000) Evaluation in Text, Evaluation in Context is designed as its sequel, in an attempt to continue, update and extend the different avenues of research opened by the earlier work. Both theoretical and empirical studies on the topic are presented, with the intention of scrutinizing as many of its dimensions as possible, by not only looking at evaluative texts, but also considering the aspects of the discursive context that affect the final evaluative meaning at both the production and reception stages of the evaluative act. Adopting a multi-perspective ontological approach to language in social life, this book investigates the concept of journalistic stance, defining it as a nexus of social practice rather than simply linguistic realizations. It focuses on the discursive aspect of journalistic stance in news texts to analyse the ways journalistic stances are enacted in Chinese and Australian print-media, hard-news reporting.
