Employee Relations is fun! At least that’s what people who have never done the work think. People who don’t do Employee Relations for a living think it is “easy” and “common sense.” But nothing is further from the truth. Fact is, it can be downright grueling. Why, you ask? Because you are dealing with people, and people are complex beings full of feelings, emotions, thoughts, beliefs, nuances, quirks, etc. And if you have ever worked with people, then you know it is not for the faint of heart. So fun is not a word I would use to describe Employee Relations; more like funny. In this line of work, you are forced to deal with all sorts of shenanigans and tomfoolery that have no business in the workplace. Situations that leave you scratching your head and asking, “Why did they think that was a good idea?” Matters that, quite frankly, closely resemble what you would witness in grade school. If you work in Employee Relations, you know exactly what I’m talking about and are probably thinking, “Amen!” If you don’t work in Employee Relations, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. (In my whispering voice) We often get together during happy hour and swap stories just to decompress from the ridiculousness we encounter on a regular basis. And you probably have been featured in one of the stories. In consideration of the above, I’ve crafted a collection of witty Employee Relations experiences into oddly analogous nursery rhymes. I hope you find them relatable and informative, and I hope the laughter you experience upon reading them is contagious.

Hugh Clegg was a founding figure of post-war British Industrial Relations, the forerunner of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management, as taught in most Business Schools today. He defined ‘industrial democracy’ as collective bargaining with trade unions, laid the foundations for the pluralist approach to Industrial Relations, was a key figure in the post-war social sciences and a major public policy player. More widely, he was an important figure in the Cold War social democratic academic left, who broke with his earlier Communism to champion free trade unions in a liberal democratic society. He also produced the major Oxford University Press trade union history. This book aims to understand the politics and industrial relations of the post-war period in Britain (in which trade unions were central) through the life of a key public intellectual. It will help readers understand the political and social science roots of contemporary Employment Relations and Human Resource Management through a deep historical study of Clegg’s life and times, in the context of his post-war social democratic generation. It illustrates how the failures of post-war industrial relations led to Thatcherism. Current Employment Relations academics and public policy can learn much from this history, making it of value to researchers, students, and academics in the fields of Human Resource Management and business and management history.

Many observers have suggested that capitalism is fast destroying our planet, concentrating power in a few big companies. Excessive short-termism, leveraged debt, digitisation, and disruption are the new normal. We stand at a critical juncture where the two paths ahead could lead to very different futures. One route could take us back to the harshest days of the early Industrial Revolution and the Great Depression. The other could lead to a world of abundance, equality, inclusivity, and prosperity for all. Which future awaits us will largely be determined by business, and HR (Human Resources) in particular. Books on HR tend to focus on HR practices and potential interventions, but they rarely look at the profession, how it evolved, and how and why those people practices were created. The HR (R)Evolution: Change the Workplace, Change the World describes the "Seven Great Waves" of change and explains how each wave impacted business. It explains how some companies are stuck in the past and how HR can break the deadlock if it understands what the future holds. This book is meant for senior business leaders or anyone currently working in HR who are grappling with the paradoxes of business today. It’s for leaders who recognise that people issues are the central challenge of our time. Whether we embrace the waves yet to come will determine whether we survive or regress, whether we flourish or flounder. The future is in our hands.

First published in 1927, Economics and Human Behaviour is a defence of orthodox economics against the attacks of social psychology. The author has explicated on the characteristics and value of both orthodox economics as well as psychology, and then presented psychology’s criticism against orthodox economics. Before concluding with the limitations of both disciplines, this tiny book reinstates the importance of orthodox economics in the gathering and interpretation of facts. Given the predominance of economics over psychology in current times, this book will be an interesting read for anyone keen on imagining the tables turned. It will also appeal to students of economics, history and psychology.
