Showcasing the voices, perspectives, and experiences of rural English teachers and students, Teaching English in Rural Communities promotes equity, diversity, and inclusivity within rural education. Specifically, this book develops a Critical Rural English Pedagogy (CREP), which draws attention to issues of power, representation, and justice related to rurality. Based on the assumption that “rurality” is a social construct, CREP critiques deficit-laden stereotypes and renderings of rural places and people that circulate in media, popular discourse, and even education at times. In doing so, CREP opens up possibilities for educators and students to use the English classroom as a space to better understand the complex issues they face as rural people and ways to promote more nuanced and comprehensive representations of rurality. In particular, this book highlights English rural classrooms whereby students examine representations of rurality in literary and media texts; decenter dominant settler-colonist narratives of rural spaces, places, and people; develop understandings of Indigenous perspectives and cultural practices, particularly related to land stewardship; and engage in local outreach to promote inclusivity within rural communities. This book also gives special attention to ways race and racism may factor into literacy education in rural contexts and possibilities for rural educators to attend to these issues.

In 2014, The Urban Education Collaborative at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte hosted its first biennial International Conference on Urban Education (ICUE) in Montego Bay, Jamaica. In 2016, the second hosting of the conference took place in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Additionally, in 2018, the third hosting of the conference took place in Nassau, Bahamas. These solution-focused conferences brought together students, teachers, scholars, public sector and business professionals as well as others from around the world to present their research and best practices on various topics pertaining to urban education. With globalisation and the opening of boundaries the English language has become an important means of communication within and across borders. This volume is rich in offering English language teaching and learning perspectives in second and foreign language settings. Many of the examples are taken from Malaysia, where English though officially deemed a second language, is seen as a third language in the rural areas where there is no external supportive target language enviroment. This is an ideal setting to discuss English language related issues as the issues raised and discussed apply to many countries where English is taught and learnt under similar settings and conditions. Microlinguistic levels of description are shown against the backdrop of a macrolinguistic perspective and language practitioners are made aware that pedagogy and syllabi change with times and local and national needs. The issues raised in this volume include the need to consider the variety of the target language to be taught and the challenges faced in teaching the English language. Raising motivational levels of learners where there is no larger supportive target language environment, divergences between what is taught and what is required in the job market and a focus on examinations which affects the methodology are some of the issues raised, discussed and analysed.
