Der Band präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer empirischen Studie, in der untersucht wurde, inwiefern im Zuge von Museumsbesuchen im Rahmen des Geschichtsunterrichts Möglichkeiten zur Förderung des historischen Denkens bei Schülerinnen und Schülern geboten werden. Die Untersuchung erfolgte am Beispiel des österreichischen Geschichtsunterrichts in der Sekundarstufe und der österreichischen Landesmuseen. Im Sinne einer Triangulation wurden Erhebungen im musealen und im schulischen Kontext durchgeführt (Ankündigungen von Kulturvermittlungsprogrammen, Experteninterviews in den Museen sowie mit Geschichtslehrkräften, Beobachtungen von Schulklassen bei Museumsbesuchen sowie in den Geschichtsstunden vor und nach diesen, schriftliche Berichte von Schülerinnen und Schülern zu diesen Museumsbesuchen). Bei der Analyse wurde auf das in den österreichischen Lehrplänen verankerte Kompetenz-Strukturmodell von FUER Bezug genommen. Der Band zeigt deutlich die Chancen, die Museumsbesuche für historisches Lernen bieten. Zudem wurden sechs Formen von gezielt durchgeführten Einbettungen von Museumsbesuchen in den Geschichtsunterricht durch die Lehrkräfte herausgearbeitet.
