Aristocrats and itinerants, unionists and nationalists, Catholics and Protestants – the Great War united thousands of Clare men and women to a cause for which many of them would go out to fight and die. Their motives varied from a sense of duty to 'king and country' to concern about the fate of 'poor Catholic Belgium'; from mercenary motives, fuelled by poverty, to the moral duty to fight for civilization against the 'savage Huns'. Some followed 'Redmond's call' to secure Home Rule, while others enlisted for sheer adventure. The work attempts, for the first time, to understand what really happened in County Clare during the Great War, how its economic and political life was radically transformed during this terrible conflict, and how the contribution of those who gave their lives was largely written out of history.'

Clare is one of the oldest and strongest of the GAA counties. Indeed, it was the home county of Michael Cusack, the founder of the Association. As with Cork and Galway, there is an east-west division in County Clare. Hurling dominates in the east, football in the west. hurling county that often failed to play up to its strength. Until the astonishing revival of the 1990s, it hadn't won a senior All-Ireland Championship since 1914, or a Munster Championship since 1932. The great team of the 1970s had the misfortune to be in the same province as one of the greatest of all Cork teams and consequently never won the provincial title. It was one of that team, Ger Loughnane, who eventually forced the breakthrough as manager in 1995. The Clare revival coincided with a massive upsurge of interest in hurling nationally. from the early twentieth century until the present day. It pays due attention to hurling, football and handball alike, and doesn't neglect the very important social and cultural side of the Association's life in the county.

Despite its isolation on the western edge of Europe, Ireland occupies vast amounts of space on the music maps of the world. Although deeply rooted in time and place, Irish songs, dances and instrumental traditions have a history of global travel that span the centuries. Whether carried by exiles, or distributed by commercial networks, Irish traditional music is one of the most popular World Music genres, while Clare, on Ireland's Atlantic seaboard, enjoys unrivaled status as a "Home of the Music," a mecca for tourists and aficionados eager to enjoy the authentic sounds of Ireland. For the first time, this remarkable soundscape is explored by an insider-a fourth generation Clare concertina player, uilleann piper and an internationally recognized authority on Irish traditional music. Entrusted with the testimonies, tune lore, and historic field recordings of Clare performers, Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin reveals why this ancient place is a site of musical pilgrimage and how it absorbed the impact of global cultural flows for centuries. These flows brought musical change inwards, while simultaneously facilitating outflows of musical change to the world beyond - in more recent times, through the music of Clare stars like Martin Hayes and the Kilfenora Céilí Band. Placing the testimony of music and music makers at the center of Irish cultural history and working from a palette of disciplines, Flowing Tides explores an Irish soundscape undergoing radical change in the period from the Napoleonic Wars to the Great Famine, from the birth of the nation state to the meteoric rise-and fall-of the Celtic Tiger. It is essential reading for all interested in Irish/Celtic music and culture.

The Presence Of The Feminine In Film written by Virginia Apperson and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-14 with Performing Arts categories.

This pioneering book introduces a largely unremarked dimension of film, the “feminine,” which cannot be reduced to women’s experience, or to men’s projections onto women. The Presence of the Feminine in Film gives body to that often rather loosely formulated Jungian conception, the “feminine aspect of psyche,” by noticing what “feminine” turns out to mean in particular cinematic contexts. Spanning seven decades—from Pride and Prejudice, Notorious, and Letter from an Unknown Woman to Monsoon Wedding, Brokeback Mountain, and The Lives of Others—the movies selected for particular study here make it clear that the feminine is at home in the movies, and that when she appears, it is to appeal to our sensibilities as well as to our senses. This is a book that will enhance the appreciation of film as a depth psychological medium.
