This publication contains the proceedings of the FAO Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation, which took place at FAO headquarters in Rome on 25-27 September 2023. The objective of the conference was to provide a neutral forum for FAO Members, producers, scientists, development agencies, policymakers, civil society and the private sector to engage in dialogue on innovations and pathways to efficiently produce more nutritious, safe and accessible animal sourced foods with a reduced environmental footprint and to contribute to vibrant local and diversified livestock systems that are more resilient to shocks and disruptions. The proceedings provide a record of the main highlights of the conference, including the opening plenary session where there were addresses by the FAO Director-General, two keynote speakers and nine participants in two high-level ministerial panels; four plenary sessions dedicated respectively to the themes of better production, better nutrition, better environment and better life, with summaries of presentations and facilitated discussions; and a final plenary session including statements from 12 participants in two high-level ministerial segments. The proceedings also include one chapter each dedicated to the Global Youth Dialogue on Sustainable Livestock Transformation; the reports of five side events and an FAO launch event which took place during the conference; and a summary of 12 success stories of sustainable livestock transformation that were showcased in an exhibition held during the conference.

In response to the escalating threat of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) have launched a revised global strategy for the prevention and control of HPAI (2024–2033) under the Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs). This updated strategy builds upon lessons from the 2008 framework and responds to new epidemiological challenges, including the widespread emergence and persistence of H5Nx viruses.Adopting a One Health approach, the strategy recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health. It aims to reduce the impact of HPAI on poultry while enhancing the resilience and sustainability of agrifood systems. By strengthening disease surveillance, improving biosecurity, and promoting science-driven interventions—including responsible vaccination and poultry sector transformation—the strategy seeks to prevent outbreaks, protect livelihoods, and minimize risks to public health.Multistakeholder collaboration is central to its implementation, with a strong emphasis on public–private partnerships to ensure effective implementation. Through continuous monitoring, evaluation, and adaptation, the strategy provides a flexible yet structured framework that enables countries to tailor prevention and control measures to their specific contexts.

Innovation Platforms (IPs) form the core of many Agricultural Research for Development programmes, stimulating multi-stakeholder collaboration and action towards the realization of agricultural development outcomes. This book enhances the body of knowledge of IPs by focusing on mature IPs in agricultural systems research, including the crop and livestock sectors, and innovations in farmer cooperatives and agricultural extension services. Resulting from an international IP case study competition, the examples reported will help the many actors involved with agricultural IPs worldwide reflect on their actions and achievements (or failures), and find tools to share their experience. Chapters feature case studies from Central Africa, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Nicaragua and Uganda. Authors reflect critically on the impact of IPs and showcase their progress, providing an important sourcebook and inspiration for students, researchers and professionals.

Updates for many countries have made it possible to estimate hunger in the world with greater accuracy this year. In particular, newly accessible data enabled the revision of the entire series of undernourishment estimates for China back to 2000, resulting in a substantial downward shift of the series of the number of undernourished in the world. Nevertheless, the revision confirms the trend reported in past editions: the number of people affected by hunger globally has been slowly on the rise since 2014. The report also shows that the burden of malnutrition in all its forms continues to be a challenge. There has been some progress for child stunting, low birthweight and exclusive breastfeeding, but at a pace that is still too slow. Childhood overweight is not improving and adult obesity is on the rise in all regions. The report complements the usual assessment of food security and nutrition with projections of what the world may look like in 2030, if trends of the last decade continue. Projections show that the world is not on track to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030 and, despite some progress, most indicators are also not on track to meet global nutrition targets. The food security and nutritional status of the most vulnerable population groups is likely to deteriorate further due to the health and socio economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report puts a spotlight on diet quality as a critical link between food security and nutrition. Meeting SDG 2 targets will only be possible if people have enough food to eat and if what they are eating is nutritious and affordable. The report also introduces new analysis of the cost and affordability of healthy diets around the world, by region and in different development contexts. It presents valuations of the health and climate-change costs associated with current food consumption patterns, as well as the potential cost savings if food consumption patterns were to shift towards healthy diets that include sustainability considerations. The report then concludes with a discussion of the policies and strategies to transform food systems to ensure affordable healthy diets, as part of the required efforts to end both hunger and all forms of malnutrition.

Two years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the health, economic, and social disruptions caused by this global crisis continue to evolve. The impacts of the pandemic are likely to endure for years to come, with poor, marginalized, and vulnerable groups the most affected. In COVID-19 & Global Food Security: Two Years Later, the editors bring together contributions from new IFPRI research, blogs, and the CGIAR COVID-19 Hub to examine the pandemic’s effects on poverty, food security, nutrition, and health around the world. This volume presents key lessons learned on food security and food system resilience in 2020 and 2021 and assesses the effectiveness of policy responses to the crisis. Looking forward, the authors consider how the pandemic experience can inform both recovery and longer-term efforts to build more resilient food systems.

Safe Management Of Wastes From Health Care Activities written by Yves Chartier and has been published by World Health Organization this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Medical categories.

This is the second edition of the WHO handbook on the safe, sustainable and affordable management of health-care waste--commonly known as "the Blue Book". The original Blue Book was a comprehensive publication used widely in health-care centers and government agencies to assist in the adoption of national guidance. It also provided support to committed medical directors and managers to make improvements and presented practical information on waste-management techniques for medical staff and waste workers. It has been more than ten years since the first edition of the Blue Book. During the intervening period, the requirements on generators of health-care wastes have evolved and new methods have become available. Consequently, WHO recognized that it was an appropriate time to update the original text. The purpose of the second edition is to expand and update the practical information in the original Blue Book. The new Blue Book is designed to continue to be a source of impartial health-care information and guidance on safe waste-management practices. The editors' intention has been to keep the best of the original publication and supplement it with the latest relevant information. The audience for the Blue Book has expanded. Initially, the publication was intended for those directly involved in the creation and handling of health-care wastes: medical staff, health-care facility directors, ancillary health workers, infection-control officers and waste workers. This is no longer the situation. A wider range of people and organizations now have an active interest in the safe management of health-care wastes: regulators, policy-makers, development organizations, voluntary groups, environmental bodies, environmental health practitioners, advisers, researchers and students. They should also find the new Blue Book of benefit to their activities. Chapters 2 and 3 explain the various types of waste produced from health-care facilities, their typical characteristics and the hazards these wastes pose to patients, staff and the general environment. Chapters 4 and 5 introduce the guiding regulatory principles for developing local or national approaches to tackling health-care waste management and transposing these into practical plans for regions and individual health-care facilities. Specific methods and technologies are described for waste minimization, segregation and treatment of health-care wastes in Chapters 6, 7 and 8. These chapters introduce the basic features of each technology and the operational and environmental characteristics required to be achieved, followed by information on the potential advantages and disadvantages of each system. To reflect concerns about the difficulties of handling health-care wastewaters, Chapter 9 is an expanded chapter with new guidance on the various sources of wastewater and wastewater treatment options for places not connected to central sewerage systems. Further chapters address issues on economics (Chapter 10), occupational safety (Chapter 11), hygiene and infection control (Chapter 12), and staff training and public awareness (Chapter 13). A wider range of information has been incorporated into this edition of the Blue Book, with the addition of two new chapters on health-care waste management in emergencies (Chapter 14) and an overview of the emerging issues of pandemics, drug-resistant pathogens, climate change and technology advances in medical techniques that will have to be accommodated by health-care waste systems in the future (Chapter 15).
