The effort to go beyond given knowledge in different domains – artistic, scientific, political, metaphysical – is a characteristic driving force in modernism and the avant-gardes. Since the late 19th century, artists and writers have frequently investigated their medium and its limits, pursued political and religious aims, and explored hitherto unknown physical, social and conceptual spaces, often in ways that combine these forms of critical inquiry into one and provoke further theoretical and methodological innovations. The fifth volume of the EAM series casts light on the history and actuality of investigations, quests and explorations in the European avant-garde and modernism from the late 19th century to the present day. The authors seek to answer questions such as: How have modernism and the avant-garde appropriated scientific knowledge, religious dogmas and social conventions, pursuing their investigation beyond the limits of given knowledge and conceptions? How have modernism and avant-garde created new conceptual models or representations where other discourses have allegedly failed? In what ways do practises of investigation, quest or exploration shape artistic work or the formal and thematic structures of artworks?

Die Beiträge des DFG-Symposions 2006 fragen nach den Möglichkeitsbedingungen dessen, was die Literaturwissenschaft als mittelalterliche und frühneuzeitliche "Literatur" kennt: Diese konstituiert sich überwiegend in Bezug auf religiöse Rede und Praxis sowie in Unterscheidung von ihr. Tiefgreifende Wandlungen im Verhältnis der vormodernen epistemischen und institutionellen Ordnungen des Literarischen und des Religiösen treten in den Einzeluntersuchungen aus der Germanistischen Mediävistik und Frühneuzeitforschung sowie aus Anglistik, Geschichte, Kunstgeschichte, Romanistik, Soziologie, Theologie- und Kirchengeschichte je exemplarisch in den Blick. Nicht zuletzt werden solche Wandlungen am "Anderen der Kommunikation" beobachtet: an jenen Über-Sprüngen in die Transzendenz oder an Präsenzeffekten des Repräsentationellen, deren Erschließung zugleich Rücksicht auf die Geltungsansprüche und Sozialdimensionen von literarischer und religiöser Kommunikation voraussetzt. Was ist ‚Naives Erzählen‘ und wieso gilt es als obsolet? Diese Arbeit untersucht die poetologischen Auswirkungen der modernen Erzählkrise auf die deutschsprachige Literatur der Jahrtausendwende am Beispiel einiger Romane Helmut Kraussers. Zum einen analysiert sie als ein Beitrag zur Helmut-Krausser-Forschung die auffällige Häufung biografischer Schreibweisen in seinem Werk. Zum anderen bestimmt sie dieses Werk als prototypisch für ein Schreiben nach der sogenannten ‚Wiederkehr des Erzählens‘, eine literarische Prosa, die gegenüber den komplexeren Ansprüchen von literarischer (Post-)Moderne immer aufs Neue ihre ‚Nicht-Naivität‘ zu beweisen hat. Gezeigt wird, welche konkreten Auswirkungen die Erzählkrise als regulierendes Diskursphänomen auf das ‚Neue Erzählen‘ seit den 1990er Jahren immer noch hat. Die Arbeit leistet einen substantiellen Beitrag zur Krausser-Forschung und markiert sowohl in ihren begriffsbestimmenden Teilen als auch vor allem im analytischen Teil selbst eine Forschungsposition zum Status des ‚Neuen Erzählens‘ nach der Postmoderne.

This book's goal is to determine the significance of visual culture in the production of contemporary poetry and to sound out the insights poetry might generate into contemporary visual culture. Its main hypothesis is that poetry holds considerable potential for (post-)digital language, image, and media criticism. The visual dimensions of recent poetry encompass, for instance, kinetic writing in digital poetry, visual elements in social media poems, and (spoken and written) text-image interactions in poetry films as well as in book poetry. The articles examine these medial correlations and their political implications by asking how visual culture is applied, exposed, and debated in poetry. This volume brings together contributions by authors from various countries working in disciplines such as literary, media, and film studies, linguistics, cultural and visual culture studies, and in poetic practice. It covers poetry in English, German, Norwegian, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Serbian, and also multilingual works. The book thus aims to promote international exchange between poetry researchers and stimulate further investigation into current relations between poetry and visuality from additional research perspectives and languages.
