This edited volume presents a comprehensive and coherent interdisciplinary analysis of challenges and possibilities for sustainable governance of the Baltic Sea ecosystem by combining knowledge and approaches from natural and social sciences. Focusing on the Ecosystem Approach to Management (EAM) and associated multi-level, multi-sector and multi-actor challenges, the book provides up-to-date descriptions and analyses of environmental governance structures and processes at the macro-regional Baltic Sea level. Organised in two parts, Part 1 presents in-depth case studies of environmental governance practices and challenges linked to five key environmental problems - eutrophication, chemical pollution, overfishing, oil discharges and invasive species. Part 2 analyses and compares governance challenges and opportunities across the five case studies, focusing on governance structures and EAM implementation, knowledge integration and science support, as well as stakeholder communication and participation. Abstract: A conference on "Fisheries Management and Climate Change in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic Sea" was convened in Bergen, Norway, 17-18 April 2008. The themes covered included climate change-related physical and biological changes in the oceans and the implications for fisheries and aquaculture activities and their sustainable management. It was concluded that there is a need to design monitoring strategies to detect critical changes in species and ecosystems, implement responsive management that can adjust quickly, identify species and ecosystems that are sensitive to changes in climate, anticipate changes in distribution and prepare responses that avoid management conflicts, maintain (or rebuild) resilience of marine ecosystems and fish stocks, and understand the socio-economic consequences of climate change on fisheries. The research that is required to underpin the preceding must be interdisciplinary and ecosystem based. However, the fisheries and marine science sectors in the Nordic countries are currently underfinanced and, therefore, are unable to expand their activities to accomplish this.

This report contributes to the understanding of how the the socio-economic contribution of Nordic fisheries/aquaculture are affected by the environment and environmental management, with focus on nitrogen. The report contains two case studies of how the socio-economic contribution of Danish/Swedish cod fishery in the Western Baltic Sea are affected by the nitrogen in the sea, and on how salmon growth rates in aquaculture in the Bokna Fiord are affected by nitrogen concentration. A Nordic workshop was held with the title: Fisheries, aquaculture and the marine environment: Environmental challenges and regulation, with focus on nitrogen. The finding of the case studies was presented at the workshop, together with presentations made by invited speakers on the role of nutrients and their management for Nordic fisheries/aquaculture. The discussion at the workshop is summarized in this report.

The Baltic Sea area is an old cultural landscape with a well developed international framework for monitoring, assessing and managing its marine ecosystems.
