This book explores the possibility of using Sanskrit as a basis for rethinking human thought and reflection, challenging the dominance of European intellectual traditions. Sanskrit, with its vast historical spread across Central, South, and Southeast Asia, as well as Europe, offers a unique reflective idiom that contrasts with the European conceptual frameworks that still dominate contemporary thinking in areas such as language, art, reason, justice, and politics. The book argues that European thinkers, despite acknowledging a shared linguistic root with Sanskrit (Indo-European), have followed a very different intellectual path, one that has historically been violent and continues to fuel contemporary conflicts. In contrast, Sanskrit's long history of coexistence with diverse languages, cultures, and polities offers alternative possibilities for understanding justice and coexistence in today's globalized world. By comparing the reflective traditions of Sanskrit with European philosophical and linguistic categories, the book seeks to demonstrate how Sanskrit offers a more inclusive, less confrontational model for engaging with the world. The book engages with Sanskrit texts, European philosophers, and language theorists to substantiate its claims. It argues that such a cross-cultural examination, which brings together the reflective traditions of both heritages, is necessary for a new kind of intellectual inquiry-one that moves beyond the entrenched paradigms of European thought and opens up new possibilities for coexistence and understanding.

The field of humanities generates a discourse that traditionally addressed the questions of what is proper to man, rights of man, crimes against humanity, human creativity and action, human reflection and performance, human utterance and artefact. The university as a philosophical-political institution transmits this humanist account. This European humanistic legacy, which is little more than Christian anthropology, barely received any questioning from cultures that faced colonialism. In such a context, this volume attempts to unravel the ‘barely secularized heritage’ of Europe (Derrida’s phrase) and its fatal consequences in other cultures. The task of Critical Humanities is to explore the ways in which the question of being human (along with non-human others) today from heterogeneous cultural ‘backgrounds’ can be undertaken. The future of the humanities teaching and research is contingent upon the risky task of configuring cultural difference from non-European locations. Such a task is inescapable and urgently needed when tectonic cultural upheavals have begun to show devastating effect on planetary coexistence today. Culture of Memory in South Asia reconfigures European representations of India as a paradigmatic extension of a classical reading, which posits the relation between text and context in a determined way. The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides disability benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. To receive SSDI or SSI disability benefits, an individual must meet the statutory definition of disability, which is "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity [SGA] by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." SSA uses a five-step sequential process to determine whether an adult applicant meets this definition. Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities examines ways to collect information about an individual's physical and mental (cognitive and noncognitive) functional abilities relevant to work requirements.
